Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there....... Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens..." But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building. The lord said, "if as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other." (Genesis 11:1-7) --Do you think that the difference in languages was a plot from Almighty God, the creature of the universe ruler of all mankind who felt jealous and afraid when he saw men speaking the same language? I say NO because the difference in languages is a miracle, and not a curse. You may want to share on this topic?

@sabado: God was not jealous and threatened when He saw men speaking the same language, nor the language confusion a result of a curse. You have just overlooked the intent of their desire to build a tower that made God act accordingly: "They said to each other, 'Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly.'" They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. Then they said, 'Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise, we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.'" -- Genesis 11:3 Their words revealed their intent to be at one place only since they have a uniform language and culture, defying God's intent for them to fill the earth and subdue it. (Genesis 1:28) Obviously, their intent to remain in one place is, not only in violation with this divine directive, but also a dangerous thing for them. There will be an ecological imbalance as a result of an overpopulation in a single area resulting to threaths in their health and well-being. Being an all-powerful God who is the Source of all wisdom, God has foreseen these ahead of time. Hence, He acted for their own benefit out of love and care.

Confusing the speech of men (dividing it into different languages) was not done because God felt jealous, but because men had disobeyed His instructions to go forth and replenish the earth Gen. 9:1. Gen. 11:9b And from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon t he face of all the earth. Mission accomplished. There is nothing said about the different languages being a curse. verse 7 of chapter 11 says that God would confound (or confuse) the language of men.

The tenth chapter of Genesis tells of how the generations of the sons of Noah were dispersed over the earth after (according to) their tongues AFTER their tongues were confused in chapter eleven.

God merely changed each person's speech to stop humanity from achieving their goal with the intention filled with pride and lust for power--the wish to become gods themselves. Humanity at that time, if you have studied the Bible well, had already mastered both land and sea. Land, conquering kingdoms. And sea, by boat/ship (or whatever you wish to call it). In that story, they wish to conquer the heaven itself where God resided. They thought that if they had conquered that place, they will become all powerful and mighty--a god. Try not to twist our words, would you, sabado_dc?

Confusing the speech of men (dividing it into different languages) was not done because God felt jealous --or he did not feel Jealous or, even if he felt jealous, how come that the difference in languages made then

No, I do not think that the differences of our language is a curse. I see it only as a lesson to humanity--and something for me to use my time to learn. People in that story wanted to reach the heavens and become gods that's why God changed each of their language to prevent such a disaster in the making.

I do not mean to say that the protagonist in every story should be free of wrinkles when in fact there are protagonists in a story who are at the same time were the antagonist. Unlike you, I'm more inclined to like a story/novel if it's the protagonist who is at the same time is the antagonist. But since the Bible said it as simple as that-- it is as it was written. -__- I do not understand what you were implying on your statement "God does not have to bring his language to his people because when he does, we could be Gods" and the statement afterward. I do not think God has a language of the tongue at all but a language of the heart--emotions. What I mean as a "lesson for humanity" is the fact that humans banded together to becoming gods. If the humans do not like how God run things, would you think they wouldn't take over God himself? The story is filled with human pride, greed and lust for power. Look at the story to its most basic of components and you shall learn what I mean and what I've learned. Have a good day and Happy MyLotting!

Oh yeah the role and lines of the main character should not be corrupted. In fact, God does not have to bring his language to his people because when he does, we could be Gods. YOu, after fulfilling the chance given to learn a new language, say for example dutch, does it mean to say that you are legitimate to be so called deutch afterwards?

I just wanna clear things up that there was no jealousy in the first place. He made it to a point to change the languages so there can be barriers to their communication, since they tried to build a tower so high they thought they could reach heaven and be of the same level as God.

He made it to a point to change the languages so there can be barriers to their communication, since they tried to build a tower so high they thought they could reach heaven and be the same level as God. --There could be more than a jealousy like sour graping and vain glory either one from those men or God himself if He did not dismantle them. Magulo ba? hehehe Just my way of imaginings

Does God need to come down from the throne in order to see them? Does God need to conspire and feel jealous or fear, what you say human feelings d feel of it the Most High Almighty for what they describe . "What is the matter with you that you do not want the Greatness of Allah "Nooh-71 "They have not valued Allah with His true value when they said 'Allah has never sent down anything to a mortal. ' Say: 'Who, then sent down the Book which Moses brought, a light and guidance for people? You put it on to parchments, revealing them and hiding much, you have now been taught what neither you nor your fathers knew before! ' Say: 'Allah. ' Then leave them, playing in their plunging. hi sabado I thought it was building the tower that reaches to the heavens was the thing God disliked but this whole passage as always confused me and I am l ike you I think the differences in languages is not a curse but a blessing that defines all of us, most of us are proud of our country and of our languages and we all can learn others lanuages.Who could the almighty be jealous or afraid as he taught us jealousy is a sin?

@Sabado: By all means you can learn many languages and won't be sinning doing so. God has realized what He wills, and no one has stopped Him. "Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto Thee..." -- Job 22:28

It's a miracle that God could do that, but a curse for men as it divided them and made them fight with one another.

Aren't there two types of curse? The first being a blight, a common curse that falls on elect and reprobate alike - "Cursed is the ground for thy sake" - and the second being that which falls on the reprobate only - "and now art thou cursed"? The confusion of tongues was a judgement sent upon the human race for their open distrust of God and their disobedience to the command to go forth and multiply. As such it belongs to the first type of curse. Yes, it is a miracle; but are not most curses miracles? The appearance of thorns, wasn't that miraculous (and Christ bore this curse for us in a crown, didn't he?). And the creation of bacteria and viruses behind the curse of sickness, wasn't that miraculous? And this curse of confusion of tongues (born for us by Christ when his Elohi Elohi was misinterpreted as an appeal to Elijah; and reversed in Apostolic sign by the gift of tongues) is likewise a miracle. And ability of the redeemed in heaven to speak and understand any language they wish to may be a final reversal of this curse.

Hi JohnRok Is reprobate alike or "Cursed is the ground for thy sake" which belongs to the first type of curse you mentioned above swearing or warning or both? Say for instance, Mom saw Dad in the hick town and gently yelled Dad, "stop drinking for Christ sake" or? And, the "and now art thou cursed" is a damnation, right? I see, I got it. Haven't read your explanation about the types of curses in the second paragraph.. Thank you so much JohnRok1!

It's a miracle, not a curse. It's a miracle that God allow people to speak in different kinds of languages and to be unique ,and be bored. God already plan that, and it is recorded in the Bible about when it start the different languages..

I think we just inherited some of things from the past. God got angered by those people who were building the tower and punished them by giving them different languages. In bible, there are many original sins that we have inherited, from the time of creation of Adam and Eve. I just do not know whether it is really a curse or is just because God wanted us to be aware of his existence.

@Mashnn, can you prove from the Bible that there really is such a thing as original sin? Consider this Biblical truth and cast out the lie told you by your religion: "The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be open himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself." -- Ezekiel 18:20 Please read the Bible so that you will not be fooled by erroneous teachings of your religion.

God did a good job that make the world has so many different languages, which I think they are wonderful but not a curse. Somehow, different languages has create certain bounderies among people. We tend to mix or be around with people that speaking the same language, but less with those who speaking other languages, aren't we? Do you think this is good?

Who says that speaking in different tongues is a curse?! The main reason why god gave us different languages is not because he was jealous or afraid that we spoke 1 language... It was because he wanted us to fullfill our main task: to spread all over the world and multiply. And surely he wouldn't allow humans to build a tower for 1 human just to be equal with god!

You have to use your imagination and understand the secondary meaning of the passage then you will know why did I say a curse in which if you have read the first sentences of my last paragraph, I opposed it.

What I see is just an idea that brought to action. Some people may see it as a curse, because they didn't see the reason behind it. But it's actually a blessing since god only wants and knows what's best for us.
