Old vs young and the other way around

Why is it that old people say that young people these days have lack of respect for the elderly? But when if it's the other way around they find it hard to believe.
I remember when I was a teenager I was cycling on a road when I encountered an old lady with a cane walking on the middle of the road! So I carefully approached her on my bike and told her politely that there is a sidewalk right next to the road. That way she is much safer. Then I stepped back on my bike and went on ahead.
And now the funny part comes!....
When I looked back behind me, I found out that the old lady didn't go on the sidewalk and yet was still walking on the middle of the road! Instead of listening to me or thanking me for it, She raised her MIDDLE FINGER at me! XD

I would like to think that the old lady, lost her sound mind. I mean no normal person will do such a risky thing to walk in the middle of the road. Maybe she suffer from alzheimers desease or other sickness associated with the old age.
