For those of you that wake up in the middle of the night and lie awake stressing over not getting your eight hours of sleep, you really need to read this article http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-16964783 I found it really interesting. I think that tonight when I wake up at 1 or 1:30, which has been happening a lot lately, instead of fighting it i will get up and get something quiet done...like responding to posts here on mylot. I guess that will be more beneficial than thinking about how tired I am going to be the next day.

As much as I would love to get 8 hours of sleep, it's easier said than done. I'm a stay-at-home mom of two little ones. So I can't get as much done during the day as I would like to, so I end up having to do a lot of the clean after they go to bed. I'm also a college student at an online college, so then I have to study and do any homework while my children are sleeping at night. It really is upsetting that I can't get 8 hours of sleep a night, but it's something I've realized that I will have to give up on for awhile. At least until my children are in school.

The whole article is about getting about 4 hours of sleep waking up and being productive for a while and then going back to sleep for a few hours. Apparently that was how our bodies were programmed before the industrial revolution.

i agree asyria51. i understand that something has changed in the way we work (no matter what our jobs are-work at home or away from home). more is being demanded of us as time goes on. we are all so stressed out and wound up, it's hard to get to sleep. once you do, it's hard to stay asleep. with me it because my head is thinking about the next day and how early i have to get up to do task i don't want to do.

I understand the thinking ahead to the next day. I am constantly doing a to do list in my head, especially when it is nice an quiet...like when I should be sleeping.

This is a very interesting topic. I have read from another article long ago that getting 8 hours of sleep is essential, but getting too much sleep can degrade your intelligence. I dont know if it's true. I just follow more or less 8 hours of sleep.

If I get too much sleep, I feel sluggish for most of the day. Much like after you are recovered from being sick but you still do not feel 100%.

Yes. If you've been in bed in more than 10 hours, it feels like you would'nt want to get up. hehehe

I sometimes sleep for nine or ten hours. SOmetimes less. I have nights where I can't sleep and I go through a series of this. THen I sleep in the early evening and stay up later for afew nights. Then I go to sleep pretty normally and am up early. Then I start all over again.

I cant do that without serious side effects. I will lag the following day, and trying to keep up with a toddler would be out of the question.

A nice article related to sleep. But sleep pattern differs from person to person. Some feel very energetic after just five to six hours of sleep while some feel lethargic even after eight hours of sleep. So try to grab the maximum and whenever you get up at night and cannot sleep just go through one of your favorit books and you will fall back to sleep again. There is nothing wrong in watching tv or sitting on the comp when you do not get sleep but as you have said one feels tired the next day. Try reading a good book and see the difference yourself. Happy mylotting.

After all of that, i managed to sleep the whole night. I went to bed a bit later than normal...closer to midnight than not, but that was because I have a little girl who was afraid of the monsters. I comforted her and got her back to sleep.

I try to get at least 7 but sometimes I get more and most of the time a little less.

getting into good habits now are a good thing. I had a hard time adjusting to my work schedule of sleep from my summer/time off schedule. Sometimes i really think it would be better for my body to stay on my work sleep schedule all the time.

Hi, Asyria. I almost never getting up in the middle of the night because I always sleep after midnight. Lol. But there are times when I get too tired when I get home from work and fall asleep as soon as my head touches the pillow. :D I usually feel grateful if I wake up in the middle of the night as I have things to do. My job if I have deadlines to do, and my games, if I have nothing to do. Lol. Also I will hang around in here on MyLot searching for discussions to respond. :D However, I never have 8-hour sleep, though. I only sleep around 5 to 6 hours a night if I'm lucky. :)) But I never feel tired the next morning.

I used to be like that, and I think the more tired I am when I go to bed IE the quicker I fall asleep the better sleep I get. I do better on less sleep when I am very active. I also like my cat naps.

I often try to sleep early but it doesn't work. But if I'm really sleepy, I'll go sleep. I won't make myself sick, right? :) Cat naps is great! :D Moreover when we're enjoy the sleep. :)

I sure don't but wish I could. Age, in my case, has a lot to do with my lack of sleep. Most nights I simply nap which isn't good and makes me so tired the next day. I usually get between 4-5 hours of sleep. Several times I week it's easy for me to fall asleep in the afternoon and take a power nap. I'm retired but do work online a little bit so really my time is my own unless I am helping with the grandkids.

I remember when my non-working time was my own. Now it is full of all the other things in my life....the biggest obstacle is the never ending pile of laundry. It seems like I am almost caught up and then it is time to get the bedding washed again, or it is Spring and time to switch out clothing and the pile is back to being neck deep.

It is all about the sleep cycle that you wake up in. I know that if i was in the middle of a dream, I wake up feeling groggy, but if i wake up not dreaming I feel better rested.

The only time I seem to not be able to go to sleep is when I have to be up very early in the morning. I guess maybe the next time this happens to me I will just come back online and earn instead of worrying about the sleep. I still need to get it, but I know usually when I do get back up I get sleepy.

When I know I HAVE to get up for something special, that is the time that i know I WILL NOT sleep no matter how much I try. I used to really stress over it...to the point of crying over it. Now I just get up and do something.

Unfortunately, I'm not always able to get 8 hours of sleep a night. Sometimes, I am able to do, but it's not always the case. I do the best that I can to get as much sleep as I possibly can.

It interest me, really. I wanna read that article because I am getting 8 hours enough sleep during the night. Yes, from 9 for example then I wake up at 5....It has a total of 8 hours but how about the middle wake ups like when the dogs are barking and sometimes going to the comfort room when have taken a lot of water before sleep.

It is pushing my bedtime, but i am going to force myself to stay up tonight to watch a new episode of one of my favorite tv series...may not be the best use of my time, but it is something I enjoy and can relax watching.

I would love to get this much sleep but it is not possible. I have an infant who keeps me occupied most of the day so whenever my child takes a nap or goes to sleep at night I try and finish all my chores that need to be completed...

I finally learned that a load of laundry can wait as long as there is something psuedo clean for me and my family to wear. Taking care of yourself is just as important, if not more so, than having a perfectly clean house.

I have get over my insomnia last 4 years. I am getting a good night sleep nowadays, the solution is do not think so much, have a solution to the problem you might have and got over it. On the other hand, while you are doing so, always pray to God to help and it can be done. Really.

I do not have insomnia so much as a child who wakes me up in the middle of the night. I call it my "super mommy hearing" which is both a blessing and a curse.

On most nights, I think that I do in fact get around eight hours or so of sleep. Well on most nights, on some nights, it is just slightly less, than eight hours of sleep, but I do get enough sleep to function as well as can be expected, to really get through the day. If nothing else it is no fewer than six, that is the bare minimum I can function. Well I can function on it but it is a slow function. Still six to eight(most times eight) hours of sleep is recommended for a reason, that being that you are really just not going to function on any less, any time soon. Of course, even with eight hours of sleep, there are going to be times where it is going to be hard to really get the juices flowing in the morning. Such is life.

I can function on 6, but I can definitely tell the difference in my performance in many tasks, along with my patience. I usually get a solid 7 hours, and try to get a cat nap in on a some what regular basis.

thanks for sharing this link. I read somewhere that for adults 6 hours of sleep is a must. I would also like to share one link http://www.transitioning.org/2009/11/20/what-killed-ranjan-das-and-lessons-for-corporate-india/ I still do not disagree with you and would prefer to do mylotting when i feel fresh after sleep...even if it is during midnight.:)

also, doing mylotting in the middle of the night, I tend to be more productive because my friends are not on facebook for me to chat with, nor do I really feel like I should be doing something else with my time.

I am normally in bed about 8 and a half hours. I actually sleep probably 7 to 7 and a half of those. It takes me a good 30 minutes in the morning to get up and get going. I also like to listen to the news in the morning, because a lot of times that is the only way I will get it.

My daughter was doing really good for about a year and a half sleeping through the night, then the past couple of months she has been getting up. Most of the time she is content to just play in her room, and does not call out, but I still hear her.
