Hi, Season seems to be good to travel and enjoy the holidays. I am not asking are you ready for it but i am sure there would be few who do shopping and packing till the last minute and also leave out (forget) some essential stuffs which they would either search in the railway platforms (in India you can find all-in-one vendors / carts)& pay extra than the cost price and relax. How many of you do the shopping till last minute? Also do you pack stuffs well in advance? Is there any experience where you had to buy something from such vendors on a higher price? For me, i do the shopping in advance but for packing.... the bag is zipped only before half an hour of my departure. Thanks for sharing.

I usually do my shopping a day or two prior to my departure to spend my holidays, cause usually if you do your shopping last minute prior to your departure you will miss a lot of things. So it is better to plan for what you will bring before shopping so that you will not miss anything.

Hi friends, it is a good thing to make a checklist that way you dont miss out essential things. But sometimes when the things are brought but we forget to pack them at the last moment. Under such circumstances we are forced to either get it from the platform vendors or buy after reaching the destination. Thanks to both of you and happy lotting!

I definitely agree with you. But there's just cases in which we tend to forget things even though we feel that we are all set a day or two before our departure. So, we would be left just buying that sortie on our destination. I experienced that once...because I was really in a hurry...and I took that as a lesson learn and would tend to make a checklist so that I won't miss anything. It feels really terrible whenever you tend to buy the same thing that you already have back at home. Anyways, happpy mylotting!

Yes smurfysmurf, that`s why you have to shop a day or two in advance so that if you miss something you still have lots of time to shop again in order for you to buy what you have forgotten. That is why making a checklist before going to Grocery to shop is the best method that you could do in order for you not to miss anything, but sometimes even though you have already listed all the thing that you have carry for unknown reason you will still miss something.

Hi viju! If am going out of station either alone or with my family, I make sure that I complete the packing well in advance. I make a list of things required for the trip and pack my stuff accordingly. It has happened on few occasions, when I forgot to pack essential items with me and I had to arrange those items when I reached at the destination. While going for trip to Nainital, just after my marriage (with my wife) in all the excitement, I forgot to pack my all important 'shaving kit' . I had to buy it afresh once I landed at Nainital.

Hi dpk, Oh, you are a systematic planner then. That way you don't forget things and also if you forget you get time to redo it. earlier experiences do teach us lessons so we learn not to forget stuffs. During two of his last trips (since i was not accompanying him) my husband forgets to take/re-pack his toiletories from the destination and purchases from the platform on a higher cost. Nainital trip.. oh, i can understand that excietement and anyways you get more stock at home... LOL.

Hello Viju, I am with you, even if shopping over well in advance, there must be something we keep for the last moment, may be simple things but there must be something left for the last moment. As we both are working and kids are going to school everyday we are busy on all those but using the Sunday to finish shopping. But on getting late, my hubby may say, ok let us go back to home, that thing we can buy later near to our home even. However, it is unusual, purchase anything from the railway station. We avoid those purchase at any cost, reason, Indian railway is really costly. So the zipper is open just before leaving to the station from home.

Viju, I prefer to get everything with me before leaving the home. I really don’t want to rush back home to get the forgotten things. My hubby used to ask hundred times and make sure that nothing to forget. Once I comment on our way to station, don’t know whether anything forgot, and his reply was, if anything you forget it will be there and am not going to back to collect it. Usually we are reaching the station in time (not early or not late). If we are leaving in a holiday then we don’t need coolies, lot of his friends accompany us to see off. Ps: I am having holidays on tomorrow and day after tomorrow. It is so sad to know, you don’t have a holiday even on good Friday.

hi sree, I had an uncle who used to pack everything well in advance and used to be at the railway station before two-three hours. Once his wife forgot to pack somthing and he had gone back home to pick that item... see another advantage of reaching the station earlier.... though not to buy it from the railway vendor. Now that uncle is no more but when we are in a group and traveling somewhere, we remember him for his witty comments and that type of energy level...very active. and we call a coolie (porter) to even carry two bags... have a nice time. ps: are you enjoying holidays? i am working the whole week... no off for good friday.

Nope, i seldom travel for myself or family till date. I travelled almost all cities of India due to perform drama and we always stay in a group and we need to follow the order of our group leader. If i am the same, then i have to give attentions to others so that they never miss anything before departure. have a nice time viju.

Hi viju though my holiday trips are confined to Hyderabad for my meeting with my doctor (and occasionally to Sai Baba at Shirdi) everytime, the zipper is closed after the auto (cab) to pick us up from home arrives - This is one habit that got into my life since I got married. As for shopping... well, we arent done ever before we leave for our destination and it always ends after our return... We keep buying things at the destination too and some of them do include soaps or even tooth pastes. And when we return, we often finish up our shopping for the trip with the purchase of packaged milk and curd (and at times a bottle of mineral water) as we empty out everything in the refrigerator before leaving

Hi thesids, Hey, toothpastes/brush, shaving kit and soaps are the most forgetton items during a travel but since now our children take care of all these little but essential items including comb, toothbrushes etc. so that is a relief for us. Buying stuffs especially shampoo/conditioner, some medicines etc at the destination is common for us. i too have this habit of emptying the refrigerator so that when we are back there is no foul smell of sour milk @ben - welcome to mylot and thanks for sharing. You may eleaborate further on the points. Also read the faq for sharing, posting discussions. happy lotting.

Great... so what is your next destination this summer? Kids grown up so take care of themselves... Leave them and you and hubby get prepared for some great days of togetherness... Maybe we can hop in too and then find out who has forgotten more

I usually packed my things a day or two before the departure. Sometimes, packing or shopping on the last minute will forget some stuffs needed for the vacation. Most of the time, which is more important are those being left or forget to buy. If ever, I forgot something, I'll just buy it on stores/malls near the destination. I don't usually buy on convinience stores or platform vendors, if not really necessary, because it really cost higher than those sold in malls.

Yes, oftentimes, items sold in flatforms or conveniece stores have alsmot 20% higher than those sold in supermarkets. If, you forgot something, better look for a nearest supermarket on your destination to buy those stuffs.

hi asdomencil, You are right, it is better to get things at destination as the platform vendors charge higher than the normal ones. it is another good habit to pack up things a couple of days ahead of journey that way the chances of forgetting items are lessen and you get more time to recheck and redo, if at all necessary. Good to hear you here. happy lotting and enjoy.

I used to travel a lot...but I don't want to rush things...so a day before, I would probably have my shopping like some groceries and other clothes that I would want to wear for that vacation... I would make things all set a night before the actual date so that I won't be in a hurry in packing and buying things up. I experienced this kind of rush before...and I already learned my lesson. So, I won't ever do it again. It is a long holiday here in my country...but not for me since I have work. Have a good mylotting!

hi, Oh no, sorry that you work and everyone around you are enjoying holidays. In India too this week is clubbed with many holidays but for me i have to be at office and no holiday for me. during my last trip, i did pack my stuffs on the morning hours of the travel day as i had to work on i don't want to take the luggage to my office. So it was a good thing and i did get time also re-check before i left for my trip. I agree with you, avoiding rush can make us relax and we can take our own time for shopping/packing. happy lotting.
