what i mean by a thrifty saver is, do you find wise ways to save on everything in your home.. like for instance when im at home by myself i will turn the tv off and leave it off until i decide to watch it again to save electricity and my husband does the opposite he has to have it on every second he is awake.. he will even go out side and leave it on.. and of course go behind him and turn it off.. and like right now he had the air on so he left for work and it is not hot outside yet so i will trun it off and use the windows and open the doors until it gets hot once againg to save.. and i always turn off lights when i leave the room. but my oldest daughter comes over here and every time she will leave and not even turn off any lights the bedroom, bsthroom whatever.. i get so aggrivated.. but i do try to find ways to save as much as i can... so i call myself a thirfty saver..

Such a lovely discussion my friend. I myself is a thrifty saver when it comes to electricity, food, money and time. I am not saying I am already perfect but as much as possible I want to save those stuffs for emergency use. For example, I make sure I turn off all the appliances not in use before I go to sleep. Another, I would not spend so much money for nonsense things or things I don't need. I should prioritize my time. It really feels great if I am able to save such things because I am concern. Thanks for this. I learned a lot. More power!

i like to save as well, our electric bill is our highest bill.. i plan to get back on the budget plan where it stays the same price all the time and you get a final biil at the end of the year telling you if you owe more money or you get money back. but we have to wait a year before we can qualify to get on it..but i think every penny counts, i also save my husbands pennies .. he will lay them on the table every day and i have a big jug i drop them in.. our kroger has a coin machine you can turn your coins into cash.. i use it alot.. we could save alot by not using paper plates and paper cups.. but i have gotten in that habit and its what we got use to years ago.. so i probably wont chnage that unless we are really broke.. take care thanks for the post..

You are very much welcome my friend. All in all, saving helps us a lot. We gain something from it. It is a very rewarding feeling when we get to save aside from the fact of saving things. It is very useful during emergency times.

Did you know that it cost MORE energy and therefore money to turn a switch on or off? It costs more to power up an appliance, tv, computer, gaming system, etc. than it does to just leave it on for hours at a time. I have tested this theory. I conserve energy by turning on only one light in the room I am in (40 watt bulbs only). But then I have cat's eyes and can see in the dark. lol If your electrical system in your house is up to par and your appliances are energy efficient (they would have had a sticker on them to that affect when purchased) and if you don't try to run every electrical unit you own at the same time, then you are saving electricity and therefore money. So leaving the tv on all day is no big deal. It doesn't consume that much electricity when running anyway. Your biggest users are your microwave and hairdryer and 100 watt bulbs in your lights. Everything else is about as energy efficient as modern technology can make them. I do agree though that turning out the overhead lights in rooms not in use is a good idea.

i had heard that before but was not sure how true it was.. we use 60 watt bulbs in our house and i have a few of the energy saving ones as well... but we leave the one lamp on all day and night i may start turning it off when i get up in the mornings and then back on at night .. i cant stand a room to be dark at all.. and i hate air becasue i want to keep my doors open but have to keep them closed if the air is on.. so i got me a big mini blind to fit my window and now i can open it to see out and i dont feel caged up lol.. but i cant open it until hubby leaves at 2.. and i will leave it open unitl dark..well got to get ready for my appointment take care thanks for the great advice..

I try to be thrifty as well. I know it is hard to keep things off when others keep the lights on. I also shop at thrift shops and buy clothes at either garage sales or at thrift stores. I buy furniture at garage sales or at thrift stores as well. I only buy things when they are on sale. randy is not working because of his foot condition and I decided as a great wife to stay at home and take care of him instead of hiring a nurse. Things have been rough, but I am managing well.

Te only thing I leave on most of the day is my computer as it is a pain for me to turn back on all the time, and I use it alot so it's not like it's being wasted. The lights, TV, etc I will turn off if I'm not using it, leaving, going out, etc. I try to be as thrift as possible but not as in being a recluse, with only 1 TV, etc, like my mom is, LOL.

I will save the unnecessary cost in my life,I do not like luxurious life but I will buy some useful stuff if I indeed need it.If I need something,I will not be a saver anymore. But in most case,I think I am thrifty saver.I don't smoke, drinking or enjoy with bar by now.My life cost is less than $100 per month.I think I can save some money in the future for decorating my room somedays.

I'm pretty stingy when it comes to using electricity and so on. I don't leave a room without turning off the light. I unplug the TV and computer when they're not in use and I have a laptop, so I will charge up the battery then unplug it and use the battery until it needs charging again. I have window air conditioners and only use them when it gets too hot and then only in the room that needs it.

Oh. Laken, I know just how you feel. Lately I feel that I am the "Power Police". Hubby is retired, and does not ever shut off lights. I do save on many things, both big and small. Besides wasted power, I really dislike wasted food. I want us to be sure to use up all of the leftovers and not let any of our food go bad.

i think of myself as a pretty thrifty saver. i, like you, get aggrivated when people in my family leave the lights on. i use leftovers, plan my meals and shop accordingly, shop at thrift stores, etc. i enjoy saving money! i always look for creative ways to do that.

I'm not bad. I used to be terrible with money, to the point where I got myself heavily in debt. But for the last few years I've slowly been changing my habits, and now I'm pretty good at saving money. I've got low energy light bulbs all over the house, and I only have one room light switched on at a time anyway (whichever room I happen to be in). I try to remember to check the oil, water and tyre pressue on my car every month, plus I've got a woman named as second driver on my insurance (this gets me a discount). I've also got heavily into supermarket loyalty cards and cashback shopping - I'm currently in the process of changing my gas and electricity suppliers via a cashback website. When that goes through, I'll be paying a bit less each month plus I'll have just over £60 cash back to come in September. I get most of my books from charity shops, I switch my car engine off when I'm waiting at the level crossing, and I concentrate on the special offers when I'm grocery shopping. There's always something you can do to save money.

Sometimes we hang our laundry to dry instead of using the dryer. And of course we turn off lights when we aren't in a room. That's about it though. I cant' really think of any other ways to really save around the house. And if it's light out, I guess we don't always turn a light on.

hi there, i do the same, even the water and all that. i also don't like it when they charge a gadget and then just leave the charger still plugged in the socket lol. my brothers just don't care about all the bills actually since it is my parents who pay for everything. sometimes even when cooking rice i tell them to just cook with charcoal because the electricity is very expensive, so is when we use the stove.

I, too try to save energy by keeping lights off and so on. My husband too has the t.v. on all the time. I use a few energy saving light bulbs too. I heard that the government is phasing out the old light bulbs in favour of the energy saving ones and that is good because they last for years and use less watts of power thus saving money on power bills. that' a good thing!

Hi laken. With the situation of the economy in the world today, everyone must do everything save on just about everything. Aside from those things that our friends mentioned earlier, me and my children opt to bring pack lunch when going to work and school. This way I could save much more compare than eating in restaurants and fastfoods.
