Have you ever approached your boss for a question like that?
This week, promotion letters were given, notices of merit increases were issued. However so, not everyone has been blessed. Some didnt even get a raise. Some didnt even have a bonus. Our company has 2 groups handling life and non-life. As there had been a good production from the life section, the employees in that team got a good raise in salaries and even had a bonus. For the non-life, since they didnt perform well in the production, expect a sad story. Just the same, there were employees in the non-life section who did just fine and was able to bring in the figures; however so, collectively, it still didnt reach the passing pool for increases and bonuses. Hence, they got none.
I understand the goals of a company. I just feel sad for those who performed well but didnt get any just because of some teammates who didnt do their job well. Hayyyyyyy...

During my working time as HR practitioner, we would give merit increases every year to deserving employees. The basis for the increase were employee performance evaluation. The employees know beforehand that they will not get an increase due to their poor work performance. This results in many grumblings and as you say sad stories. However, some employees expect to be rewarded even without performing well and they are the ones who keep on making negative comments on almost everything connected with the job. Salary increases is one of the best means of giving employee motivation. Money has always been a very big factor for workers as well as promotions but we don't often do that since it leads to more employee dissatisfaction. Some can interact better with a new supervisor than one who has been their previous co-worker no matter if they know that the person has done exceptional work. It seems that workers always believe that they are better than their peers and don't do anything to improve on their work attitude and performance.

The best way to get a raise is to make yourself so valuable to the man you work for, that he can't imagine being without you. So then you go to him and tell him your thinking about quitting (in favor of a job that pays better). Then hes going to say, "Oh no don't do that! I can give you more money to stay and work for me!"

That's pretty sad but maybe, even though some employees did well, the problem is, they were not able to work well with their teammates, meaning, they didn't do the extra mile to extend what they know and what they do to their teammates so that they could achieve together what they needed to achieve. I know it's hard, but in a place of work with teams, one should be an effective team player and not just an effective individual. That's the task and maybe that's how the company sees it. That is also the job of a team leader, which is to push his team members and motivate them to reach goals, so everybody would be happy. Anyway, there's always a next time to do better.

That is sad, but unfortunately that is how most companies/organizations work now a days, everything is based on production and profits. When you work as a team, most of the time organizations only recognize it in that form, they don't tend to recognize the person as an individual, which definitely sucks. Because that person could've put it in his or her maximum effort and because the team as a whole failed that individual gets penalized. It is sad to see that your co-workers are all getting raises and you;re not must be devastating.

That is pretty bad. But the company should have a different way to encourage their workers. Rather than doing it section-wise, they can focus on each individual. This ensures that one works hard to get their desired promotion or raise and also, that one can slack off, thinking that the others can work hard and one can get a raise easily! The current promotion and raise method is pretty bad. The non-life section members can suggest for a change in this method. A change will definitely boost everyone's morale and that could be the spark to get to a nice suitable well-paying position!! :)
