I don't know if I should take this masterclass.

My mum told me that there's this masterclass for storytelling. But I have mix feelings about it. Then she proceed to tell me it's a skill needed to be a comic artist and enable you to have a creative storytelling and so on.
But the way she talked about it, it's like she indirectly telling me I have no creativity or storytelling skill. I mean if I take the class (it's an expensive class) I will probably learn their style of comic storytelling or the basics of comic storytelling (which I already know due to reading a lot of manga and comics and doing internet research).
What if the style they teach is not to my liking? What if my mum spend hundreds for nothing?
I want to develop my own style. Can't I?

I think that you are taking this the wrong way. Any help is always good help so I believe you should take the class. Even if you don't like their "style" (which is something I doubt will happen), I think that it will be good to build off of it or learn different perspectives. Being a comic book author is challenging so take the offer and use it to the best of your advantages. At least go to one class or better yet, the whole class and then decide if it was a waste.

Yeah, the main point that my family don't have a lot of money. We are not rich.
So I'm pretty much afraid it might a waste if it's useless. Although I could take it for fun to experience how a pro tells his story. (At least the guy seem like a good storyteller but I've a lot of crap churn out in the comic industry by pros)

Wow. I totally read that wrong. I though it was "inexpensive" not "expensive." I feel like a lame brain.
But still, I think it is a good opportunity. And your mother is offering it so I would take it.

There is for sure many ways of telling stories, you have to know which kind of audience you like to attracted young kids, adults, than you know which kind of story telling you want to be, or better, look at stand up comedie, we often look at Seinfield, being a good comedian is being a good story teller too, whatever, if there is classes online that is a lot cheaper than to go to the masterclass, well. see if you can find some good alternative .

Are you familiar with Peter Saisselin? He's featured in the newspaper about the masterclass.
I'm not sure online classes will provide the same quality as the masterclass. But I try finding one.

its always fun to be in class..youll learn a lot from your professor/lecturer and the other people you're with.you'll get a lot of ideas...your mom wants you to join the class not because you dont have the skills but probably she knows that you'll definitely develop your talent more...so just enjoy..ill say dont worry about the expenses..its an investment!

Not every class you take is going to be to your liking, whether you like that or not. Often, industries, no matter what they are, are set on basic rules that must be learned and kept for publishers to accept you. For example, I like to be creative in my music, but I still must write it in a basic parameter for musicians of all kinds to understand and enjoy! If you are doing things way off in your own way, others will not understand, or see you as a professional. Take the class, and if you have problems with it, then you can bring that up in discussion with the instructor and the rest of the class. I am sure you are not alone in feeling that you need to be bound by a 'structure', no matter how loose it may be.

You can develop your own style, but the class MIGHT teach you even just one little thing that you need to know. You can always learn something new. How long is the class, it is a year, or 5 months? If it is a short class, I say take it and see what you learn. My son does manga, and he is a fanatic about learning new things.

hi there,
if you think you have the ability to do it on your own, then go for it i am happy to hear this coming form you that you believe in yourself.
i suggest that maybe you can talk to your mom and explain to here that you wont be taking the class and give you the chance to discover more of your abilities and talents especially that money is limited, you also have to consider that.
i am happy for you. keep it up and reach for your goal

hi there trinity downpour,
Well i always do say that it is better to have a theoretical background on things that you do, then i apply in int the realistic phase of what I do. I suggest my friend research very well regarding this matter so that if you decide to take it you know what your getting into and if not well at least you know what you didn't waste money and not getting into.
