How many of you know the legend of mother pelican and the connection between that legend and the christian faith ? The legend is that when there was nothing to eat the mother pelican wounded herself, striking her breast with the beak to feed her babies with her blood and meat.Another version is that the mother pelican was gone to hunt and a snake came and injected venom in her babies. The mother pelican comes back and she will wound herself and use her blood to cure the babies. The pelican is sometimes painted in eastern and western churches and it appeared on the first page of the old KJV Bible.

This is the first time I read about this myth, but what does this myth in Christianity? Or do you want to say that swan is the Christ?

Hi Samar and thanks for your comment.Yes it seems the early Christians have created or have discovered this legend and associated it with Christ. The legend also appeared in Hamlet :"To his good friends thus wide I'll open my arms. And, like the kind life-rendering pelican, Repast them with my blood."

Do you have any kind of evidence to back this claim up? Please post a link if you can.

ah ok. I see. The symbol of the pelican was used in Christian art to symbolize Jesus.

Hi iuliuxd, I seem to vaguely remember hearing something about that story when I was just a boy, or many I read it somewhere. In any case it was a long time ago and I hadn't thought of it in years. It is an interesting story and I can see the connection. Blessings.
