Unemployment and its effects

I have been unemployed since I graduated university last July with a 2.2 in my degree. I currently live in the UK and there seems to be all the same types of jobs advertised which all ask for experience which I am not going to have just coming out of university.
Unlike many people in the UK I am now desperate for any job so that I have some income, the problem is that in the UK more companies are cutting down their staff and unemployment is increasing as a result.
The effects unemployment have had on me have been that I have lost motivation as I started off applying for jobs daily but then when you get rejections daily or no responses daily you lose the drive.I have had to adapt the way that I job search now what I do now is search one day book mark the jobs I want to apply for and apply the next day.
The effects of being unemployed to me is that it has caused me to have to life on a shoe string, I cannot afford to go out or buy birthday presents. So it is really effecting my life, it also at times makes me feel that I am not good enough and I get down.
I currently have to sign on to the job centre every 2 weeks and find that until recently they were useless at giving me advice I sat there at the start and told them the jobs I had experience in and they were trying to get me to apply for jobs I had no hope in getting.
NOW PEOPLE WHO SAY I AM BEING TOO FUSSY WITH THE JOBS I APPLY FOR HAVE NOT READ THIS I HAVE APPLIED TO WORK IN SUPERMARKETS, RETAIL SHOPS, CARD SHOPS AND HAD NO LUCK.
If you are unemployed how does it effect you?

Hi chillpill! Never lose hope my friend. There is a right time for everything. As I can see you have been a member of this site for a long time. Is this the only site you have? Meanwhile that you are looking for a full time job, take all the opportunities an online job can offer. I have several friends whom I know quit their full time job to concentrate more on their online job. Because they said they earn more online than the full time job that they have. They told me they work at odesk. Regarding your offline job search, take a look at the areas you might consider yourself weak. Are you applying for a job on your field of specialization? Do you dress yourself appropriately when you go for an interview? Do you answer the questions confidently? There are only some factors that we should consider when looking for a job.

You aren't being fussy at all. I am in the exact same boat you're in. I have experience in retail and computer upgrade / repair but yet now locally to me (even within 40 miles) there is only 5 main stores left for it and one of them is my ex boss which I didn't part from on nice terms. There used to be dozens upon dozens within that radius. To me though on that front I blame the likes of tescos and online suppliers to the general public. No one (computer wise) seems to be interested in shopping somewhere where you can get help if needed, advice and assistance there and then. They'd rather save a few quid. Can't say I blame them though with all the recent tax increases and so on. Right now id take anything even if its only 16hours a week to begin with. But I either fail on experience or fail on qualifications. But who is to blame? The employer or learning facilities for setting standards too high?
For me it goes like this,
Day 1 - Job search - find a job I can do - apply - rejected or hear nothing.
Day 2 - call into stores of any kind (from clothing stores to hmv to game to pc world etc etc to be told there is no positions available
Day 3 - get a few responses asking if I have a piece of paper saying im qualified as it would be needed regardless of my experience. Whether I have it or not doesn't seem to matter as then with some jobs they want x amount of years experience which to me is ridiculous. How can anyone get a job lately if employers who are still employing expect people to have ridiculous amount of years experience and a qualification or two also if they aren't given a chance to get most importantly (in my opinion) the experience.
Day 4 - start from day 1 again and repeat
Not knowing which part of the UK you're in im curious, is this latest 'recession' hitting you hard? A lot of our small stores which have been around for as long as I can remember (im 27 currently) are trying damn hard to remain opened. A friend of mine who works for a large store (which I wont mention) has also mentioned they may be selling the company or closing its doors.
As for the job offices, I couldn't agree more. They are useless. Me and my partner (who only recently got laid off due to a huge downturn in business in the store she worked in) asked them about getting some qualifications to help with job prospects. For us to get help in that way we first have to print out or supply them with newspaper clippings etc of jobs we are applying for / wanting to apply for and what qualifications are needed and they will try their best to get us onto a course for it. However the downfall is that they have a 'select list' of courses they will send you on. So it seems to me no matter if you have a qualification, most cases you will lose out due to the experience wanted.
There is a whole bunch of Accounting jobs which is great for people in that field but I looked at a few earlier, for curiosity and was a bit surprised by a few which one essential part of the criteria was that you needed over 6yrs experience in one case an amount of 9 yrs experience. Thats just ridiculous if you ask me.
I've given up asking the job office people anything, I just go in sign on and leave again calling into local stores on the way past to see if anything is available. I've even asked the job office themselves for a job lol. So they can see im keen to work but when it comes to helping? They're a joke
How it effects my life in general is tough also, as just like you I can't afford what I want, I can't always go where I want when I want. And seeing as my partner recently got laid off we are a joint claim and seem to get a bit less than a single person, work that one out....But at the end of the day you just gotta stick to it and something will come along eventually. I did hear back today that I was short listed for a possible interview and id be contacted by Wednesday if thats the case, so heres hoping
What kind of degree do you have just out of curiosity?
Goodluck in your search though, Hope you find the success soon.

Yes, finding job is hard , and the true motivation is no money to paid food and no money to paid rent have to be homeless starving and live on charity food. Hence have to find work, my fren graduate from college and starting work even before graduating in fast food restraurants and have 2 job , he quite optimistic because the food is free and can take back whatever leftover are there. Looking for job is quite depressing especially during interview where they belittle your , look down at your and talk bad in front of your face.

Its rubbish state of affairs when it has come to the point where you study for years and to be told you will not get a job let alone a decent living! I have friends who have gone to University only to be exactly in the same situation as yourself. That's this country for you! I could turn political about it but then I would be just getting more miffed. My husband is ex forces he came out jobless also, took him 3 years to find a part time job stacking Debenhams clothes for a rubbish minimum wage. Served his queen and country and just gets thrown to the bottom like everyone else. We are now thinking of Immigrating to New Zealand where he is a resident and start a fresh for our family, get back to a decent life. I am a florist by trade, and I always able to just find floral design work now and then, but its getting worse and harder to make ends meet. Good luck and keep fingers crossed you find something very soon :0)

I totally agree with you, being unemployed is awful, I was laid off in March and your right there is nothing out there. Regardless of what kind of job your looking at.
I have continued to get up every morning and do the same routine I did when I was working, just to try and keep some stability in my day.
Good Luck I hope you find something soon.....

Many, many people are unemployed and therefore have to struggle. That's the way it is. It's all aboiut attitude. You need a good attitude when you are employed and you need a good attitude when you are unemployed.
Of course you cannot go out! Of course you must live on a shoe string and tighten your belt.
You must treat unemployment as if it in itself is a job. How many hours a day are you looking for work? You must really work hard at finding a job, just as you need to work hard at a job once you get one. Spend at least 3 days full time looking for a job. Have a reference card made up with your personal details and your skills set out on it so you can leave it with people rather than a full resume. Take on a couple of volunteer jobs...not only do you meet people who can help you but it is something else you can put on your resume, you gain new skills, and helping your community gives you a good feeling. Volunteers are generally held in high esteem as it shows how willing you are to work and to help.
Just going into a store and asking for work will get you nowhere. You make a bad impression doing this or else you make no impression. For larger companies, check online in there "employment" sections...you can usually get the necessary forms and apply that way.
My nephew is living over there at the moment and he had no problem finding work.
Don't give being unemployed the time to affect you. Be more pro-active rather than wallowing in misery. Complaining about it gets you nowhere.

hi chillpill I am here in the U S in California and we are second highest in unemployment here in the US . My son was out of work f or a long time til he met a friend he he had worked with years back. He networked with this friend who got him a part time job where heworked, and now he has got more hours and is almost full time. He had to take work at fifteen dollars an hour doing electronic re pais whenhe was a computer programmer at 30 dollars an hour but as he said,"MOM A JOB RIGHT NOW IS A JOB i AM MAKING MONEY WHICH I REALLY NEED NOW.He is 52 so he had the same ex p experience as you have no work experience just out of college,he had years of experience and they had only jobs for thowse with less experiences. here in C California the cost of living is outrageous. How is it in the UK?

while waiting for employment maybe you should go find something you're passionate about.
and do it.
who knows, this just might be your ticket to getting some income your way.
or meet people who just might need your unique set of talents.
i've had bouts of unemployment before but after meeting a lot of people who recognize my skills, i've always landed in a job.
or freelance work.
don't be desperate.
just go do something about it and not wait for people to get you. you gotta go grab it.
good luck friend.

my partner has been exactly the same. she's been looking for work for 2 and a half years every since she was laid off. she got a job in kfc, but she was laid off 4 months ago. she only worked there for 5 months. it was a new building and apparently they had over-anticipated the amount of staff needed, and it was last in first out.
she currently signs on every 2 weeks, and applies for everything going, and doesn't even get called back for an interview because she doesnt have a degree!
she even got put into the steps to work programme by the jobs and benefits office and after 7 weeks of talking backward anf forward about start dates, they announced that they didn't have the funds to continute with the course! ridiculous or what?
sure i have a job, and i applied for a job in the civil service, which i was have 6 years experience of in that role. and a girl i know also applied for the same position. she has NO work experience whatsoever except a part-time job in her dad's chip shop.. yet she got the job and i didn't because she had a degree! even though they'd have to train her from scratch, and i'd have been able to go right in and get to work.
the whole job process needs better managed if you ask me! better laws and restrictions and vetting processes!!

I know how you feel I have experience of retail for like 6 years but when I apply for jobs where it is clear I have relevant experience I get rejected. I feel that this could be because they are worried that in your case you might actually know more than the person you would be working under and so feel threatened.

| had work for 6 years, resigned, had been unemployed for 3 years, and just got a new job.Just don't lose your hope and be optimistic at all times.I know how you feel now.Sometimes unemployment and all the rejections from job applications can lower our self esteem and we feel sorry for ourselves.Well, I think it's good to think the other way around.Don't feel sorry for yourself;feel sorry for those employers who rejected you; because they just lost a really good worker. You can also get some trainings for you to have more qualifications in finding a job, even without a formal job experience.

I feel you will find a job soon ,may be to find a job hard is the distance of the requirement of you and the company, of course you have graduated from school ,you need a good job, there are some job in street but too low for you.
In this time you can telephone your friends to ask what kind of jobs do they find, can they recomend some job for you ? Or do you have some sisters or brothers what about their opinions? Can you find some friends to company with you to find job together? May be you will find some job fits for you.
I am housewife in China ,I come to the board to find some infomation ,I do not have many opinions ,but when I first to find a good job ,some big company did not apply to me ,but some town company reply to me .
I think you will find a job happily soon if you talk about to your friends.
You are so good ,it dose not matter you have no pocket money ,condition will change and you will have money to be with your friends on journey again.

I am not unemployed, however I work only 7 hours a week at 2 part time jobs...yep 7 hours...so I might as well be unemployed. I have found that filling out applications for min. wage jobs( such as supermarket, fast food..etc) are worthless and a waste of time if you have a degree. They have to pay you more if you have a degree so the company would rather get a teen for the summer than paying more for someone who might get bored with the job and has to have more pay in the end. What is your degree in? Do you have a BA or Masters? If only BA or AA, I would suggest going back to school so that you can further focus your goals and be trained in more things. If you already have a degree..I have found that it is better to show up at the company with resumes, rather than filling them out online. I have applied to thousands of job, and have yet to obtain one this way.

I'm still studying at university and I have a part time job in an IT assistance society. My uncle has been unemployed for two years. He lost his job when he was 43 years old. He had to go to live with his mother again, he signed up on the job centre. Nobody hires nowadays, especially if the unemplyed it's not young. and in the end, we live in Italy so....
