So, what exactly is life?

India

We were born without our consent. We grow up, get a job, get married, produce children, raise them, see them get settled in life and get married, see the grand children and get sick and die.... Is that all about life? What is the meaning of life? Does life have any meaning? Just wondering.... Life perhaps is an opportunity to create a meaning...... What do you say?

Produce children.. When I read that ..its so true.. So mundane..right? I think birth, job, marriage, children, and whatever..are just like those stations that we get down at when traveling in train. Ultimately, there is nothing to life..shunya..Gandhi will be forgotten like Buddha, and many before. Obama will be forgotten like Lincoln and many before. Nobody was ever important. Nobody will ever be important. We just fool ourselves that we are important and we matter. LOL

Hi, Vandi, I once wanted to start a big industry and manufacture high tech products. But God had other ideas, I ended up producing two lovely children. Life sometimes seems to be so full of meaning and sometimes it's so empty (shunya)as you said. Buddha and Gandhi's were not forgotten, only their teachings were forgotten. As far as we are concerned, people will have nothing to remember.... When we leave the Earth, we should leave not just our children but also some fame as well. I have children but no fame. That's what i could achieve in this birth so far.... Let me keep on trying till the end.....

Hey, Buddha is remembered somewhat, there were many before and many after that have been forgotten. I just cited a few.. We dont matter, we never did..the sooner we accept that, we will get real..we are just like some molecules performing some movements according to circumstances..and chemicals and temperatures ...and rays...and cosmic energies..nothing more. In fact, if god were to appear before us, we would find it very silly to ask him our wishes, and tell him our woes because the Universe is simply too big for us to understand, and the more we know the less significant we become, right?

If God appears before me, I will ask him why he created women when he already had created this vast complex, ununderstandable Universe?

We have been given life and I accept it with gratitude. As the great poet Avvayar had said it is rare to be born, and that too to be born with all faculties is an even rarer gift. I do not know what the meaning of life is. Honestly, this is too great a topic and subject for my limited intellect.

I feel it would be ideal if we make a positive impact on someone's life. It would be great if we can make a lasting impact on a vast majority of people but I feel it is not possible for an ordinary person like me .I would be satisfied if I have done some good for a limited number of people at least. I know I have in a select few cases and would like the number to expand. This apart, we must realize God and for this allow ourselves to get immersed in religion. This is what you essentially have termed as 'spirituality ‘This is such a vast topic and a difficult thing to achieve. Only God should help me do it.

I agree with all your points Kala. Spirituality is easier said than to understand and practice. It takes a lot of patience, dedication and hard work to grow spiritually. Though I am in the first step of this great mission, I enjoy having started my efforts how small they be.

Avvai's words are absolutely correct. I think we all forget the importance of spiritual growth and success. It will help our souls to grow and get merged with the Almighty in this or coming births. I do hope you can agree with that though it may seem ridiculous to people from countries other than India.

What u said is just about us and what happens around our life. But there is one more life which is recognised by all. Ex. Mother teresa, Though she is no more, her services were recognised by the entire world . The things which we use in our day to day life were invented by someone whom we dont even know and not seen either but when someone ask us who discovered an electric bulb or TV, or fridge , immediately we tell their name. In the same way our life has definitely got some meaning if we use it in the proper way and the whole world recognises us even after we are no more

Hello vathsala, how are you and your family? You made some good points really. But I think we must meditate and try to grow spiritually in this birth.

Hi, Vijayanths, I am fine and so is my family. I think if we meditate and grow spiritually, only our mind may become matured and we grow spiritually . But if we want to live some meaningful life, we should live for others and their welfare. Being loved and respected by others is a blessing which gives contendness and satisfaction. May be i am wrong but this is what i feel strongly

Wow, i never thought of that until now, I am not a religious person but what i learned from the church was God created us to inherit the earth. From what you said, i could see that life is just a cycle. But what is our ultimate purpose. I think we were created in order to die and go to heaven? And before we could go to heaven, we must pass the test God has given us. Growing up, getting a job and get married are but parts of our journey towards our ultimate end. So the purpose of us being born, for me, is to be able to take the journey to heaven to live with God in his kingdom. This is just my analysis.

Hi, What I wanted to say is that there is Almighty/Cosmic Energy there to which you can get connected through meditation. When you can get connected you will grow spiritually. If you can attain enough spiritual growth you may be able to get merged with the almighty, it may take several births though..

It is true, we are born without our consent. We, however, realize that life is a gift! Those who believe in Religions, says that life is a gift of God, while atheists, however, say they were lucky to be born (at least some of them!) Living well or living badly, depends on the circumstances in which you live, and also from the other side right or wrong choices we make. Many have always posed the question: What is the meaning of our life? I believe that the task to find out, waiting for us! Living entails certain sacrifices, such as work, sweat and other things, but siasmo also rewarded by the pleasures that sometimes our life offers us.

hi, alberello getting connected to the almighty should be our main objective of life. I think so.

Humankind has wrestled with this question for thousands of years.. What is life? I would say that life simply is.. It doesn't mean anything, it is just lived. I feel that we take on physical life for the soul, spirit or true self or whatever you want to call existence, to learn. To learn the challenges of the physical body with its desires. As a Zen practitioner, I have often got the sense of Self as just being. No thought, still mind... Just observing and listening to the inner silence. There is no reason for being, so therefore experience is unreasonable.. What it is, is a mystery and I don't think anybody can give an answer, only point the way in which we may be able to realize it for ouselves. No, we don't ask to be born and live our life, because only rational mind asks.. True Self is beyond the ability of reason and cannot be rationalised. Nobody in history has managed to do that. The great masters tried, but I am not sure that humanity was ready.. Will it ever be ready? That is a question we need to ask now I think.. _Derek

hi, derek_a , I think we should help our soul to grow over the births till it gets merged with the Almighty. That's why in ancient India our sages were giving great importance to meditation. Thanks for the great response.

interesting you ask that. unfortunately, there's not solid answer to that. life is a journey we get to travel before reaching the final destination. and this journey just happens to include school, job, kids, marriage etc. in the end we may love it or we leave a bit bittersweet about it, but in tookhe end we at least know we came to the end of journey alive (old age) and it makes us proud and happy to leave in peace. thats pretty much what life is journey to be lived, but its your choice how and where you steer the wheel, hopefully is only to good and successful destinations.

you said it so well ap0calyptic. However we must grow spiritually in this world, I think.

yes what you said is a normal process of life, but we also have a choice if we want it that way or we want something else. the only choice we can't make is to be born and die but the rest we can.

Life is to get success from different situations. Life is to help others, to be happy and let the people happy in just my opinions. The people who live for others is a successful life and to give happy to others is a key to get success in life.

9 Apr 12
hi,shrmanoj you made some good points. Loving and helping others is one of the meanings of life, I think.
7 Apr 12
If we see life as plain as that there is no meaning in it. But if we see life beyond that routinary cycle then we can find the real meaning of life. Life is what we make it as the saying goes. For me life has full of meanings and I really wish to live forever and see all the good things in life. We are the one who can make the meaning of our life.

I think that school and jobs are things that our government required us to do, but without it our goal can not be accomplished. I think that we create the meanings of our life. Well it's all clear that we're gonna die someday - sooner or later, but we shouldn't think about that. All we should do is to chase our dreams and every each of us has a different dream and different view of life so that's a very extensive question.

9 Apr 12
That's well said my dear friend Extourmed . I agree with you fully. However there is much more beyond this materialistic success in life. That's the spirituality I am talking about.

life is a gift of nature in which you are here to live in a meaningful way....be specific live in a hard way...this is kalyug and no one is happy im this world...try to minimise your sins as low as possible and try to get "moksha"....this is the ultimate goal of life,,,...

I agree with you that life is an opportunity to create a meaning. At some point we get confused why our life's like this, problems and stuffs like that which would test your true character as a person. I guess, Life teaches you how to be strong when no one is willing to catch you when you stumble, teaches you how to be wise when everyone seems to fool you with words, teaches you how to stand on your own when you find that there is no one who can save you from anything. Life is about finding your own self, creating meaning and purpose within yourself, and by inspiring others, you create a meaningful and purposeful mankind.

Hi Vijayanths Well, I had misjudged the meaning of life when I was healthy and spent most of it running after so many things... chasing them for no real good. Today I think that Life has just one meaning and a quite simple one (thought quite different for different people) - LIVE! and Enjoy. The moment is right now... and there is no other moment that can be important to you - if you lived this moment it adds to something for you else... you just are heading towards your sad end.

hi, thesidss, as you said we need to enjoy the present to the fulest. That said, it's all about small happiness. If we get connected to the almighty/ Cosmic energy, that's the ultimate happiness. Then we will have the meaning of our life.

What if life itself is already a meaning? Being alive perhaps is for us to appreciate what life is. There is pain so that we know how to appreciate when we have no pain. There is sadness to remind us to appreciate happiness. Yes, happiness is the meaning of life. The love we got from our parents makes us happy. The job we do makes us happy. The wife we married makes us happy. The child we got makes us happy etc... All those happiness makes us love being alive. And when we can sacrifice ourselves in times of emergency for someone that we love, it is the meaning of life for us.

8 Apr 12
Hi, I do agree with your points. All these happiness are small and human life is meant for much better happiness. That is getting united to the Almighty or the Cosmic Energy. Spiritual betterment is what we should strive for...

Yes we are born in life without our consent thats true, and all of that you mentioned are true also, but life is not a routine, we humans have succeded to make life a routine.. having a family and all is a goal not a routine, you either set it or not..
• India
8 Apr 12
Yes, scarl3t that's how we all live. But there is something above all these. That's getting connected to the God/cosmic energy by meditation. That is the ultimate happiness and the real meaning of life.

In my opinion, life is about living your everyday life. There are times where we succeed and fail. During the times we fail, we must try something over and over till we get the hang of it. Sometimes, it's too much to bear and the quitters die. Why? They had no support. :/
