Does anyone else have any thoughts about the fairly recent demise of the traditional nursery rhyme?
I once worked with someone who said that the problem is that there are no recent nursery rhymes. I disagree. I think nursery rhymes are very important for children who are learning to develop language skills and pre-reading skills. I think that children who learn nursery rhymes can become better readers than those who don't. Obviously this isn't true in 100% of cases, but I think that concepts such as rhyme, words and vocabulary, which are found in nursery rhymes are really important for children. Plus, the time spent with caregivers learning the rhymes/saying them together also benefits the child.

We don't really need new nursery rhymes, if no one is interested in doing so. Business may not be as good for that genre. However, nursery rhymes are immortal and should still be part of early learning. Its the easiest and fun way for kids to learn how to chant, sing and appreciate the world.
