football (American football)

Can someone please explain football to me? I mean, American football, not soccer. I don't really get it. Is the main idea to get the ball from your end into the other end, kind of like a reverse Capture the Flag? What is the difference between a touchdown and a down. How many points are assigned for each? If the idea is to tackle people in order to get the ball, then why are there penalties or flags or whatever? I just don't get it!

The aim of American football is to move the ball from one end of the field over the goal line of your opponents. A touchdown is when one catches or moves with the ball over the goal line of their opponents while downs are 4 chances that a team is given to move forward with the ball. Penalties are called when a down is replayed.
