Tanning Beds

Do you get a jumpstart on your tan by visiting tanning beds? Have seen people in our area with pretty tans already and they admit they have been to a tanning salon. I went once years ago until my dermatologist told me it was just as dangerous as laying in the sun. I use to worship the sun but not any longer. Have had way too many problems with my skin as a result. And to think a few years ago I entertained buying a tanning parlor. Later decided it wasn't such a good idea.

These things don't really exist here in my area, we just have too much sun! hehehe.. But I bet if there were, I doubt a lot would avail because here in my country, fairer skin (whiter) the better. Anyhow, I think it's really pretty dangerous if the dermatologist told you so. But I guess most people wouldn't think much of it as long as their vanity is satisfied. Have a great MyLot experience ahead!

Wish I lived in a warmer climate. You are exactly right about vanity. Thanks for responding.

I'm really pale. So does that mean I'd be popular over there? lol

Oh, I'm not referring to pale. hehehe.. I'm referring to the pinkish white fair skin that most Chinese have :)

Nope, I don't try to get a tan. I have strawberry-blonde hair and what I've always called "red-headed skin", meaning I have freckles and an inability to tan much. Besides, I'm always conscious of the very real threat of skin cancer. I have entertained the thought of going to one of those spray-on tanning places, though. I wouldn't mind doing that if I had a special event coming up but wouldn't want to over-do it since I have a very light complexion naturally. I'd just look fake with a dark "tan".

I totally understand. I am very fair and have blonde/brown hair. I use to be covered with freckles. As a result of being in the sun so much as a kid, I have had my share of skin cancer. It hasn't been fun having my body cut up but I had to do something. I do like the idea of tanning beds but was advised not to visit any now or ever. Don't have any idea how the spray on tan would look on fair skin. Thanks for responding.

I have a really nice tan on my left arm, but I don't have any tan at all at this point in time on my right arm. I guess that is because of the fact that I spend so much time in the driver's seat of my car. That said, I've only actually been in a tanning bed once in my life and that was one that my godmother owned. I only used it the one time because I'm claustrophobic and I really didn't like the feel of being closed in the bed.

I can relate to the left arm tan. I tanned in a tanning bed years ago but wasn't so impressed. My complexion is fair so I need to be careful. More fun to be on a beach somewhere even though I try to avoid the sun as I get older. Thanks for responding.

yes, both method of tanning are dangerous. there s no safe anymore. i think there are tanning spray or just like a lotion where it could just rub on the skin. lucky, for me do not need to undergo tanning as my skin is already light brown from Asian skin. i also heard from news that tanning bed or from ts radiation could cause cancer and those i saw in the moves if there is an accident about the operation there is a risk of getting burn which is not good. just be happy loving what already you have :-)

I agree. I tried the foam on my legs once to see if it looked like my ugly, white legs would look tan. My skin turned orange and so did my hands from putting the stuff on my legs. Never used it again. Thanks for responding.

I dont have a good tan right now but I like to just sit in the sun and get a more natural tan. It is nice and peaceful and it feels really good.

Love to see a natural looking tan. It's just more attractive then being fried in the sun or at a tanning salon. Thanks for responding.

Tanning beds are dangerous for people especially young people like teens. They say they are more prone to skin problems or cancer. I , personally would just use the sun on beautiful beach somewhere to get a tan, the natural way.

That would be my choice too. Beautiful beach sounds really good right about now. Thanks for responding.

My parent's neighbor is a tanning bed freak. And she looks awful. She's one of the women who bleaches her hair blonde, and with the dark tan that makes her look ethnic, but you know she's not, she jut looks odd. I don't know how many unnatural blondes I see with those deep, dark tans. I have no interest in looking like I just came from a tanning bed. And a lot of them look leathery when they are older, like the neighbor. I've got pale skin, and I cannot tell you how many compliments I get, have always gotten, on my complexion. It's like the one physical attribute I've never bemoaned. So I've never had a yen to tan. My sister on the other hand has the attitude that she never tans well unless she burns first.

When I was a kid I always burned. Didn't think much of it since we had no air conditioning. Several years later I was so sorry to be out in the sun for most of my teenage years. And yes, the sun can make the skin leathery as we age. Thanks for responding.

I have never been in a tanning booth...I am a bit clostrophic....so I don't think I would be very comfortable in one....and I am not a bit sun worshiper...pretty pale here!

I went a couple of times when younger. Tan's are suppose to be so pretty and I can't argue that one. I use to be in the sun so much but not anymore. I learned a valid lesson from sun overexposure. Thanks for responding.

Even though I am a skin type that is naturally resistant to the sun (I'm Italian and have olive skin) I don't mess with tanning beds or sit under the sun for hours at a time. I have had friends who have done that and some of them have contracted cancer and have passed away from the cancer. I would rather be untanned than have the other option. I too have heard about the dangers of tanning beds and have no desire to have that used to tan my skin. Plus I have seen people who have spent years in the sun getting that dark brown tan and after a few years they suddenly look like a pitted prune, they are so wrinkled that it is unbelievable. Tanning? Forget it for me!!

I do try to warn our adult kids. They know my history from too much sun but they really don't listen. All of them did tan at a salon for awhile but finally stopped. And I totally agree with you about seeing people that look like a prune as they age from over exposure to the sun or tanning beds. Thanks for responding.

If I could buy a tanning salon I would, that good money..a LOT of people tan and really its their choice if they want to tan or not so you wouldnt be responsible for anything... I have only gone tanning a few times in my life.Lat time was last month I went for the entire month and got me a nice little tan.The only bad thing about it is not im spoiled and find it to hard to lay out in the sun and get a tan,its too hot im used to getting a tan with a cold air conditoning fac blowing on me.lol

I love the sun but it doesn't love me. It would be a profitable business which is why I tossed the idea around a few years ago. Like your idea of a cold air conditioning fan blowing on you. Clever idea. Thanks for responding.

Whenever someone says tanning, the first thing that comes to my mind is the scene from Final Destination 4 where the 2 girl burned in there. The sun these days isn't very good since it has become so much brighter since it is old and the ozone in thinning. scary... You can just go out in the sun but don't exceed 15 minutes and use lotion with high spf..

I think the same applies to tanning beds however the sun is probably healthier. Those ultra violet rays can't be too safe. Thanks for responding.

Busy people here use the tanning beds more often. Working people like it because a person doesn't have to waste time at the beach or in the sun for a long period of time. Tanning beds aren't safe is what I was told by the doctor. Am sure he was referring to overuse. Thanks for responding.

I really don't know what causes skin cancer or not now. Exposing our skin to the sun is said to cause it, and on the other hand vitamin D deficiency is also said to increade the risk. We get vitamin D partly through the sunshine or tanning beds. So I guess everything can be accepted in moderation. I don't visit tanning beds. My skin is very fair and I get sunburnt very easily, sometimes even with protection. I was working on getting a nice tan for a while, but the result was either dark pink or red skin, or no result at all.

According to my doctor, all my skin issues are a result of being in the sun too much. This is when I thought I'd try a tanning bed. I burned there also so it's not all that safe. I understand since I can burn right through sunscreen also. Gets me right where my nose turns up...lol Thanks for responding.
