I was attending a seminar when the speaker who happens to be the head of a certain division of our office, offered us an audio cd which costs $8.50. He said he was doing this fund raising activity for a good cause. As the proceeds of this will be used for the repair of their office and to buy office supplies and equipments. Although I know that I am not very fond of listening such kind of music. I know also that I don't need this thing, I bought one. There are really some instances that we can not say No. Why do we have to do some things for the sake of not disappointing others? Come to think of it, a government building to be funded from a fund raising activity? Have you experience similar situation?

Such situations occur because the person raising funds cannot just tell you to leave eight dollars on his or her desk on your way out. These people therefore devise ways to politely ask for the money and in most instances you never know how to decline. One such instance in my life was when my pastor printed calendars costing 4 dollars and made the members to buy them.

I guess I do stuff sometimes to please people. But never in the sense of money value...
I mean I will put in effort or spend more time than required. Money is not something that I think should be used. For charity, I prefer to donate towards a cause, a hunger or orphans, definitely not for a company to do repairs... In my country, you can be sued for corruption if you have that kind of fund raising...

Like some of the responder in this discussion. I wont probably but the cd if the reason is just to fix the office and buy office supplies. I am more willing to give in if it is for a feeding program or something to help the poor. I mean, they are funded by the government and if they want to, they can get something out of their own pocket. As I have learned, salaries in the government offices are more higher than on private companies even the bonus too. I think that it is not a good cause but we have different preferences. Doing things for the good of other people is not just to please them but to help them especially those who are in the streets.

The dynamics of human life is that, they rely on each other to progress. At one point or another we have to make sacrifices for people we interact with on a day to day basis, some we know some we don't.
Today its your friend on the receiving end, tomorrow its gonna be you, for we all have different causes in life

I think the fund raising activity will not totally used in creating the building, it will just become part of it. However, for me, it is not good idea since before starting to build infrastructure, it has already funded by the government.
Yes, sometimes, I do the same just not to disappoint others especially close friends. But I have to think twice before proceeding to buy such stuffs. If I am not going to use it, I will not go for it. For a thing that costs $8.50 and will not be used, that's a big NO. Practicality still matters.

for me, we always have a choice..if i'm in your shoe, i won't buy the cd..because repair of offices and supplies are the company's responsibility..they don't need fund raising unless the company is a non profiting company..but whatever it is, company's have their own funds..i'd rather cd for a cause of helping orphans and for victims of calamities..

That's just a cop out to be honest this guy selling cd's to repair the work place. More like to repair his bank balance! that is not classed a a reasonable charity, repairs should be coming out of the business books and accounts not it's employees pockets. I wouldn't have bought one but your just too nice to refuse.
