Easter break is here for my college. I was looking forward to it so that I could start my spring cleaning and not be sick. It seems like every Easter Break I would end up sick. Once it was the measles and other times it was either colds or pneumonia. This year I have been staying clear of people who remotely sound sick. I have been super careful about being in doctor's offices, ER's, hospitals, handling door knobs, faucets, counters, shopping carts and anything else that might have tons of germs on them. I was so proud of myself and my not getting sick for Easter Break. I even did some bragging about it here on the Lot. I did say that I should be careful and knock on wood. Well friends, I wasn't careful enough! I didn't get sick this year, fortunately. No runny nose, coughing, sneezing, flu, or like symptoms or ailments. UNTIL, this morning. I was looking for something on my beading desk. I have papers, garden seeds, beads, magazines and more on it. I also had a metal punch for making my own price tags. It was a great idea because it would save tons of money on buying hanging price tags. It sat on top of all the stuff on the beading desk like a good little punch. It didn't move during our small earth quake. It didn't move when the cats jumped up on the desk to look out the window. It didn't move when I opened the windows to let some air into the house. It was being a good little five pound punch until this morning when I stood at the beading desk and moved one magazine that was across the desk from the punch. It came hurtling down at an amazing amount of speed and landed smack on it's metal edge right on my big toe on my left foot! It hurt like fury!!! The air was blue while I hopped around on my right leg and rubbed the left toe. OUCH!!! I got that sick feeling in the pit of my stomach that I get when I break a bone. OH NO, it can't be!!! I hobbled into the bathroom and got out the nail polish remover to check the nail. The punch landed just behind the nail, which makes it hurt even more! Got the polish off and it looked good, no redness no bruising. Relief, the pain should be gone in about 45 minutes. Bill came and picked me up for our trip to town, I was going to wear shoes but changed my mind because the pain hadn't gone away and the shoe felt a bit tight. No problem.. I have plenty of sandals and even though it was going to rain it would work out okay. But then I got in the car and looked down at my big toe. If I had painted it green it would have passed for a pickle. Off to the ER we went. It took 15 minutes to get into the ER, five more to see the doctor who ordered xrays, 30 minutes of waiting for the xrays to be read and the doctor to get back to me and 10 seconds for my Spring Break to be ruined. I managed to break my freakin toe!!! I should know better by now that I do need to keep my mouth shut and my thoughts to myself. I can hardly walk because of the toe, and it is turning interesting colors. It wasn't put in a cast because they can't do things like that with toes. I am in a "boot", which is a cushioned walking shoe to help make it more comfortable to walk. (It doesn't work trust me!) So, I need to write a huge sign to remind me to not make bold statements just before Spring Break ; those rotten little gremlins lay in wait for me to make those stupid comments about having a illness free vacation. How was your Easter/Spring Break? (Yes, you can point and laugh. I hurt terribly but I can see the humor in the whole situation.)

Oh no, I won't point and laugh, I KNOW the pain of a broken toe, even though I didn't get proof my toe was broken, I am 99.9% sure it was. Mine happened right before Thanksgiving many years ago. It was about a day or two before the holiday and I was cleaning the kitchen for the dinner guests, (this was back when we could have company), and on the top shelf we had one of those "real" maple syrup bottles, you know the kind, they are small, but the glass is so thick, it makes it a very heavy glass, even if it were empty. Anyway, reaching up to remove something next to the syrup, the bottle fell and hit my left big toe. At the time we had Dana, our deaf dalmatian, only she wasn't 100% deaf, and I screamed, (yes, when I am in extreme pain, anyone within 300 feet or more knows it ) and ran into the living room, plopping myself on the floor. Poor Dana, she jumped up and didn't know what to think. Now that I think about it, I think this did happen the day before, because we had a few more items we needed at the store, so when my husband came home, he gave me some pain medicine and said, "No reason to go to the doctor/hospital, there is nothing they can do about it" and off we went to the store. Problem was, I have a low tolerance of pain and usually pain meds do nothing for me, (I had an emergency room dentist give me about three Tylenol 3 for tooth pain until I could get in to see the dentist, end up taking all three that night and was still in pain) so I walk leaning on the cart, hopping around the store and my husband was too concerned to pick up stuff we didn't need, that by the time I gathered what I knew we needed, I told him I was going back out to the car, because my toe hurt so bad. Like I said, low tolerance of pain and pain meds do nothing, so as I am sitting in the car, the pain kept getting worse and worse and whether it was the pain or my reaction to the meds, I think I start to hyperventilate or something, my vision blacken and I had trouble breathing. Soon a car pulled up next to us and a woman got out. I asked her if she would have my husband paged and to tell him I was not doing too well. Of course within seconds of her entering the store, my husband came out and wasn't too happy when I told him I had a woman page him and he said something like, "Well what do you want me to do, they can't do anything about a broken toe" So I guess since I didn't get any sympathy, (actually I did from my children and in laws, just not my husband) I won't laugh and hope you are feeling better soon. The worse part of it, besides the first few hours of pain, was months later when my nail started to loosen up. I wasn't about to pull or cut it, so I kept it bandaged when I was out, and careful with it at home and allowed it to fall off naturally.

I am thinking that after this time I haven't had any problems, that the joint is ok, and I am sorry, I can't laugh because though it was so long ago, my tolerance of pain is low and all I can think of is the pain. My son-in-law had a pair of crutches I used to help prepare the meal, but stupid me, I jumped up to grab a last minute item and forgot when I went to sit back down and hit my toe on the table leg..Didn't hit it hard, in fact I barely touched it, but the people knew I hit my toe by the expression on my face.. I remember the stories you have told me before about your father, and I am sorry he was so cruel.

Well, since I and the roomie no longer work around people with kids, neither one of us get sick as often as we used to. I also nearly always have shoes on because I have trouble standing/walking without my inserts. Maybe you can sit and rearrange things?

What Spring Break? I am picking up little jobs here and there, and then got invited to travel and work this weekend. We need the money in the budget, so we will do it, and on our way home, after working like crazy all day Sunday, we will clean the lake cabin for the tenants that will be arriving Monday. . . I started getting scratchy throat last Thursday. I sang on Sunday. Felt better, then got back home. I worked at a new position on Monday, should have done another new job yesterday, but "POW" I have been hit by a cold or sinus infection, sore throat, lack of sleep. Going to go do the other new position today, anyway. I feel almost decent this morning. I think I am at my limit for jobs right now. I am sorry about your toe. You will have to do some sedentary things while letting it heal.

I had an infection once that had me so swollen the doctor put me on steroids, as well as antibiotics. It did not test for flu or strep, he just said I was incredibly stolen and my head was packed as well as my chest. I think I am working on this one fast enough that I will be okay. I use a nasal saline rinse all the time, and even more when sick. I love your laughter at things.

Actually today I think it's hilarious!! I don't have "normal" accidents and this isn't any different. Imagine what it was like telling the doctor that my toe was broken by a scrap booking tool!!! And they thought that scrap booking wasn't hazardous to your health. My toe is turning all kinds of wonderful colors and still could pass for a pickle as swollen it has remained over night. Unfortunately I can't stand the mess in the work room so I am going to continue to try to get it cleaned up this week. I have always been the kind of person to not sit around when I get hurt. I know that my boyfriend will come down and pamper me a lot, but in between I'll be getting the jobs I planned finished. Thank you for your kindness! It makes the toe hurt less, but what will make it feel even better is if you get a good laugh at my idiocy!

You should have been in the ER when I tried to tell the doctor and nurses what happened. I would dissolve into giggles every time I got to the point that the scrap booking tool fell on my big toe and broke it. Soon the entire ER and Xray Departments were laughing. This morning I can see even more humor in the situation. I hate the boot, but it does keep it from hurting so badly. It's cushioned and open so that nothing rubs on the toe. Right now if anything touches the toe it hurts like crazy. I am so glad that you got a good laugh out of the situation. I still swear that if the swelling doesn't go down on my toe I am going to paint it green and call it a pickle. Right now it's all kinds of shades of red and purple. It's spreading all the way down to the foot itself. Unfortunately I am a get up and go type of person and I will be getting back to the cleaning job I started last Saturday. I want to at least get the sorting and dumping part of the job finished. I am going to take it easy and not bother with the windows until later...besides the fact that we are having rain storms come through California so it would be a gross exercise in futility to go ahead and wash them right now.
