It seems everything you buy is caked with not only preservatives but sugar. It's really sad when there are so many things out there marketed as being good for you but they always forget to read that one of their top ingredients is either high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) or sugar. I haven't done well with behaving since we just celebrated Easter and there's still candy floating around the house. But I thought for those interested I'd post this article. And ask what are your healthier alternatives to what's listed? http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/10/sugar-in-food_n_1413206.html?ncid=edlinkusaolp00000009#s854585&title=Related_Video

Surprisingly, I don't use most of the foods they show. Healthier alternatives: Yogurt - buy plain yogurt and flavor it yourself, using stevia instead of sugar if you need it to be sweet. Tomato sauce - make your own, from your own tomatoes if you can, but if not, buy tomatoes on sale or at a farmer's market. Granola bars - why eat them? Or make your own with less honey and more good stuff. Salad dressing - plain old oil and vinegar is still good. Put some spices in a small bottle of vinegar and let it set for a week or so, then add olive oil and shake. Muffins - make your own, or eat a half muffin at a time. Or have an apple instead. Canned fruit - opt for light syrup or no sugar added and limit portions. Smoothies - make your own without added sugar! Even if you have to buy a cheap blender to do it. Cold cereal - it's not a food, anyway. But if you have to have it, look at the sugar content. Plain corn flakes even have sugar in them. Better to eat cooked cereal made from basic ingredients, not the instant kind. It's frustrating to me that you can't even buy a decent loaf of sandwich bread that isn't loaded with sugar. I sometimes think that maybe "they" really are out to get us!

I sometimes think that not having time to cook is a myth or a crutch. I know it's hard to come home after working all day and then cook a meal from scratch, but with some planning... how about putting meals in a crockpot before work? Or cooking for the freezer on days off? Or making a simple meal like grilled meat, salad and cooking frozen vegetables? Ok, I'll get off my soap box! I had more dire thoughts in mind when I said "out to get us" but let's leave that alone, too!

"They" are out to get us... in the name of profits! Food mfgr's know we don't have the time to do things like we used to. Mother's don't have time to make home made bread everyday let alone 3 meals from scratch ( w/o any cheats like jarred sauces ect), care for their families, and work! It would take too much time and expense to do things that way. There are I believe less than 10 companies in our country that control our entire food system, less than 5 even. *shaking head*

I am a sugar aholic......I think. I usually eat more then what you are supposed to eat...It was interesting to read this article and see that it also raises blood pressure and cholesteral....I have both high....guess I'd better lay off the candy.

Indeed we all have to behave and lay off from the candy and junk. The sad thing is how much of what we eat is not processed in some way or another in a factory? And if you want to make it from scratch people just don't have the time to say make spaghetti from scratch... the noodles and pasta. It's a day long project.

Did you know that they even add fructose to baby formula?! Researchers think that's a big reason that have such an epidemic of childhood obesity. Did you know that nothing naturally poisonous is sweet? I look at sugar as poison. Sure, I have treats once in awhile and it's hard to resist chocolate but I may as well be eating rat poison for all the good sugar does me.

Everyone needs to cut down. It's a dirty shame it's in every product that's on the store shelves with few natural exceptions!

I don't really think that sugar is really poison to our bodies, but I do think that when taken in excess that it isn't good for us at all (of course I feel that this is true with everything that is taken in excess). That said, honey is a really good alternative to sugar and so is agave syrup. What I personally can't deal with is any of the artificial sweeteners (they give me really bad headaches).

Honestly, I don't think that everything should have sugar in it, and I don't think that people should use sugar all of the time. I think that there are many alternatives to sugar. When it comes to my tea, I never use sugar, I use honey if it is available. There are sweeteners, but I would be so careful with those.

If you really want to take control of your life, do not buy or eat processed foods. The reason is that food processors must dress up their products to make them tempting for their customers, To do this they use sugar, food coloring, corn syrup, MSG, and other chemicals and preservatives, (to extend shelf life). None of these processed foods are healthy, and people wonder why they get cancers, diabetes, and heart-disease.

Several years ago I went with my husband to the United States. We stayed in an apart hotel and planned to do some of our meals at home as he was diabetic. We had to go hiking to buy anything for breakfast without loads of sugar. In my country we don´t eat that much sugar ever and that means that the percentage of obese people is lower, although it has climbed up since MacDonald´s came here to stay. The excess of refined sugar in a diet is almost as bad for your health as being a drunkard. It is a pity that governments don´t regulate some of the normal food, such as bread or whatever children eat most.

Yeah, sugar is main problem today cis like you said that almost all food has sugar in it. For me sugar has two faces, in one side we need sugar as one of energy sources. If sugar quantity is low enough we could suffer some kinds of disease. In the other side, if the quantity of sugar is so high in our body we could suffer from diabetes or obesity. The best we can do is consuming sugar in balanced quantity. We can get sugar not only from candies or sugar but also from carbohydrate. So we should be so wise measuring the amount of sugar we consume in a day. Having fruits abd vegetables more than cake or snack is one of good ways to limit sugar.
