What is Instagram? Why facebook bought them?

I heard in a news yesterday that facbeook bought a web called instagram. The news said that facebook bought it nearly a billion dollars in cash and stock.
What i want to ask is, what is Instagram actually? What i know it is a photo sharing site? What so important from isntagram that make facebook bought it? What will it do to facebook?
Please Share your opinion about this and any other information that you know?

i read it on newspaper about a few days ago. I wonder too, why facebook bought it. I think mark have a plan about it.

It makes absolute sense for Facebook to buy Instagram. Instagram is a photo sharing program that allows you to share your photos freely on all social networking sites including Instagram itself. Facebook being a social net working website and having control of Instagram means that they can improve services to their subscribers without incurring extra costs.
