Dreams are our brain's surrealistic, symbolic way of sorting out our subconscious feelings/reactions to what is going on in our lives. I'd guess, possibly wrongly, that your friend is in his waking state yet in his subconscious mind, maybe fearing becoming involved with people who he knows will be a lot of trouble to him in some way, or cause him a lot of trouble. I only say that because many years ago I used to have a recurring dream on a similar topic to your friend, and it was at a time in my life when many other people were taking advantage of me, dumping all their problems on me and expecting me to sort out all their crap.

No, sorry, I can't help you, normally dreams are just your brain sorting through unconscious thoughts, and don't have any meaning whatsoever. I will agree that the dream was unpleasent and hopefully he won't have that dream again.
