To live forever

This brief thought came to me when I was watching the following comment on a TV station: "the people watching this show will be the last generation to die or the first generation to live forever" The comment was not a metaphor but a statement based on the advances of genetics and science in general. All these will unable us in the near future to find the secret of life. Like any person, if you will ask me, in the last day of my life, if I like to live more, I will most probably answer yes. This does not mean is good for life, society or for the unborn generations. Think a moment... If we all are going to live forever, this implies that we are not going to have any children. The Earth would not accommodate them. In other words it's either them or us. Because they are not born, it's us. How many times you saw older people change their opinions? Rare, very rare. A society formed from very old people would be a static, society. A society without evolution, without mutations, without the nature's goal of perfection. Without our ancestors dead we would never walk on this planet. It is our right to change the things? I doubt.

There are some things which are best left untouched. And whenever we humans have tried to change such things, results have been disastrous. The same will happen in case this - immortality thing - is going to happen. Though the science and medicine research is heading fast towards achieving this, I am sure that they are also researching on anti-aging. So that should keep the old age thing away - as humans tend to get old, they do start getting so many other ailments. This research seems too good a thing to happen for many, but I would definitely prefer to die rather than live forever.

The idea of living forever is still an utopia, but with the extremely fast progress made by science and medicine in the last decades it doesn't seem such a remote perspective anymore. However,if it becomes reality one day it will definitely raise many new problems, the most important one being that the Earth would soon become too small for so many people,so I guess that scientists will have to intensify their efforts to make it possible for humans to live on other planets as well.Anyway, suppose we become immortal eventually,I believe there will also be medicines that will allow us to remain young in body and mind, and so we'll all live happy in a perfect society in which all the people will probably look and think the same, cause there will some price to pay for the immortality, but we will be so brainwashed that we won't realize it.However,if we don't live to see those times, which is very likely cause immortality might still take decades to become reality,it's up to the future generations to reach it and enjoy it.

Well,I kinda like that idea FOR MYSELF...Not saying its perfect for everyone.. I already have children so....If I was the last generation to die, that would mean my daughter would live forever, and honestly I like the thought of my daughter never dieing..And if I was the first generation to live forever..that means I could live forever with my daughter..I know some Christian's would find what I'm saying appalling but I love my daughter more then anything in the world and I would LOVE to live forever with her......BUT as far as us not being able to have children.Im not so sure about that...We wouldn't die from being old no..BUT people are killed everyday and their life's taken,so I still think we would have babies just not so many so fast..

In the Western world, we don't need to worry about this at all. With obesity hitting record limits, kids getting diabetes hand over fist and getting fatter by the day, this is the first generation in ages that are most likely going to die before their parents. Have you seen how fat Americans are getting? Take a gander at the waddlers in Evansville, Indiana, and you will be staggered. We see it on a telly show here in England, and we're amazed at how huge they are. Medical science can't save us and make us live forever, it won't work that way. My guess is that the closer they get, the richer you'll have to be to 'earn' the right to live to new levels of decrepitude. Richard Branson could afford it, I certainly couldn't. Nor would I want to. All those people out there that want to live forever, and still don't know what to do with themselves on a rainy day? Sad, isn't it?

I highly doubt anyone will ever live forever. But I am sure that the life span could be stretched to 10 or even 100 thousand years. In that case, people would still be productive, but not to quick to have children. The win reason would be that we age much slower then we do now. One year would not equal one year. One year could be something like one or two thousands years as we currently know. There are pros and cons this this discussion. Most people want to be around forever or at least for an extremely long time. But as it is now that is not possible. But if you look into history, people now are living longer then generations past. When once the average life span was some like 65 is now more like 85. So we are living like 20 years longer these days. Thats evolution. And I am sure in the future, people would live or have a life span of like 150 years. Everything takes time.

For human beings to live forever, they would have to assume another life form. Some trees live longer than we do. The previous generations used to live longer than we do. The average lifespan of human beings is said to have gone down to just above 50 years. For us to live forever, it would have to involve more than just alteration to our genes.

i think that if they have us live forever, they would probably make a way for us not to have to age. that's the thing. living forever is one thing. living forever in a healthy and young body is a totally different thing. i wonder if they realize that.
