Most people don't like the smell of garlic, onions, fish sauce, certain kinds of cheese etc. But why is it that these products makes the food so tasty despite the smell?

I don´t think that garlic or onion stik. They smell and that´s quite different. I would not be tempted by whte rice if I did not small the crushed garlid I fried it with. I use onions and garlic in every meal and my house does not smell of anything but cleanness and home. I think thta people who cannot stand the smell of certain ingredients will not be happy with their taste either.

I don't totaly agree with you. For example, I can't stand the smell of dry salted fish and squid when I fry it, but I love eating it.

There is not such thing as stinky food! I can never cook without onion or garlic or spices and herbs as a former cook and catering assistant I had the chance...and privilege...to taste a whole variety of food and I never was put out because of the smell I approach all food with an open mind some I like and some I don't but I Am always willing to try.

I guess it's all in the perception. I like the smell of garlic and onions, although I don't care for the smell of fish sauce. Blue cheese to me smells heavenly, but I know that others don't think so. Anyway, I like the smell and I like the taste of most of these 'stinky' foods.
