i just heard the news update that due to the increase number of individuals who spit anywhere in public places, the government will pass a bill that pronounces SPITTING as a CRIME. for me, whether it will be passed or not, people must AVOID doing such act. they must consider the bad effect of spitting - especially in terms of health. most of communicable diseases come in various shape, but the more common route is through airborne. so think of other innocent people who have low immune system and acquire the disease? it will be an addition expense for them to treat their sickness. come on! have some sense of responsibility. don't just think of yourself solely, but think of others who will be affected by you wrong act.

It sounds to me like a good way for the government to make money. If you make it a law, you can impose a fine when it is violated. It may even reduce unemployment. Special people would have to be hired to cover certain sections and check for violators. The police couldn't handle it. They could probably be called the "Spit Squad".

In which country spitting will be a crime? And how will they check/controll it?
In my country it's already not normal or polite to spit (around) but it doesn't mean you won't find a person wo is not doing it. I don't think the police will have time to check out people who spit around. There are worser crimes, even although I can't say I am fond of people who do so. I think it's impolite and disgusting as well.

yeah! i believe the government will have a team to monitor those people spitting in public. actually, i was cleared out last night that it was just a plan - a scheme to provide threat to those who are so fond of spitting anywhere. but, the public, in the larger view, must take into consideration that by spitting they can spread some known virus that can impose threat to the health of others.

Spitting in public is never a good thing. I know if someone has aids and spits on you. Depending on where they spit at you can easily catch aids as well. So, it is a big health issue. Spitting is not only gross but ewww....would you want to sit or walk in to someone's else fluids? Surely not me.

agree! that is what i keep on emphasizing. people in this manner could spread certain communicable diseases that are airborne in nature like tuberculosis. and the act per se, spitting anywhere, is not proper. for me, it is indecency. why spit in public when you can do it somewhere else right? and the beauty of nature is ruined because of someone's saliva. so sad!

You are correct! Hmmm...I also do not understand people spitting just around anywhere. It is an individual responsibility not to spit that way. Self-discipline must be implemented. They must have to be concern to their fellows and spitting in the right place indicates respect to others. Peole who spit anywhere do not respect themselves. Or they are not educated about the effect of doing that. Government has been passing the bill maybe because people are much concern of not violating a law than of the health of others. We need a law to lead everyone to act for the common goal. People tend to be careful in their action when they know that they are following a rule.

you got a good point there. since the society is much concern with the law, abides it whatsoever, then this may be the reason why officials have come up with this scheme of making this a crime. people often do take for granted health over the law. and yes! why can't they consider the health of other people? why they have the nerve to spit anywhere in public and showcase how illiterate they are? they have a place where they can thrust their saliva out from their mouth.

I never spit, in public or private places, so I should not feel concerned. However, I think that if every bad manner was considered as a crime, life would be hellish. I also think that it is not good to criminalize small things like this, if you want people to be aware of a concept like good and evil : it is easy to spit in a public place, and maybe -- or maybe not : a spit is certainly less dangerous than a handshake to transfer a disease, and you will not transfer more disease than when you breathe, though to breathe is not yet a crime -- damageable to others. But, if spitting is considered as a crime, what is a murder ? I hope you see the problem : serious incrimination should be reserved to serious "crimes".

i got your point. the other side of the coin, i also wonder why the officials have come to this scheme of putting people who spit in public behind bars. they can impose instead a penalty or fine to those being caught and orient them about the negative effects the act can cause rather than dragging people to jail. there is more to attend to than this minute wrongdoings.

But what if you just have to spit? What if you cough something up, and it feels so gross in your mouth, that you just have to spit it out? Are you telling me that you're going to get at least a fine for spitting that gross stuff out?
It really only comes down to how unattractive spitting is, far more then it being a help for the spread of illnesses. If you have a communicable disease, then spitting will release the airborn virus, but far less then coughing or sneezing would (sneezing being the most powerful) and if you have bacteria or viruses in your spit, they'd most likely die on the ground, and not get to anyone. Even if you cover up when you sneeze or cough, you shouldn't use your hands, because then you can get your illness on anything you touch. Will it be the next law that you must carry hand sanitizer?

Maybe just pass an ordinance with the local government units that's governing the territory and have some be penalized if the ordinance is violated. But still cannot be considered as a "crime".

I do hope this gets imposed and executed well. It would really help minimize spreading contagious diseases. However, they have to provide designated spitting areas, to encourage people to avoid spitting just anywhere. For some, spitting has become a habit or mannerism that they can't stop. And of course, spitting out phlegm for those with cough. So, they can't just stop people from spitting, but direct them to the right area.
