Is it all just a Contest????

We see people fight over religion. There is fighting among different religions and also among atheists. Having watched many arguments, I have come to a conclusion. Isn't it all just a contest, a competition?? Who will win the argument seems to be more important than discovery of the actual truth. The victor smiles as soon as the other sides accepts. Should anyone really accept beliefs? We should discover the truth rather than accept beliefs. If it's only about who will win the argument, go ahead and put that feather in your cap. Claiming victory in winning competitions means very little after the smallest of times. On the other hand, the discovery of the truth stays with you. Which will you choose??

I become suspicious on anyone who talks pf speaks of his/ her religion as though he/she is a good follower. I found too often, they are just covering what the bad things they did in life...

You have a point. Very few volunteer to talk about their bad choices.

Yes, the one that really bothers me is when they use goodness for a evil purpose. I would choose that no one get hurt with goodness, however that isn't always the case.

Most people will cover the bad things they did in life... that's normal. But to actually talks like a holy person when they are not better than the others?

The one who refers to it as a contest is the one who sees it as a contest. Some of us see it as trying to bring the lost to the truth of God's plan of salvation for man through Christ. We care enough about the lost to try to help them.

My statement stands. "Does this goal make you feel better than others or more special???" Ask yourself that question. "There are many issues that remain hidden because many do not want to face the real truth." That is why YOU never give an answer to a direct question.

Clearly, Bestboy, You will never be happy with any of my answers, still it is good that you have to read them to comment back. Be careful. The truth has a way of getting in. As for myself, I am no more or no less than any of God's children. Gotta Love them. Yes. I am about truth rather than beliefs. I realize sometimes people do not understand the truth so the rely upon their beliefs.

Is this really what you are after??? Be true to yourself first. If you were really caring about helping others, wouldn't you be sure you had truths rather than merely believing what you say is true?? Does this goal make you feel better than others or more special??? There are many issues that remain hidden because many do not want to face the real truth. We must all look to ourselves to see what our true goal really is.

Isn't discovering the truth the same as winning?

Is relishing ice cream scoop the same as winning?

There are things and people who outwardly have very attractive or appetizing qualities and/or features and we find ourselves liking him, her or it, but sometimes what we're attracted to is hazardous to our well being. I enjoy ice cream and eat it right from the carton, but over the past year I've gained 10 pounds that I should have been working to lose not add. Relishing ice cream is not a winner for me, just a pleasure.

Well, i hate it when people fight over religious matters, as no one will ever win..because people look and read the bible differently and translate it differently. So it is pretty useless to argue over it.

No one likes to see fighting, however people do learn from interactions of all kinds. Of course, some people are slow learners.

Hi bird: This feeling is quite depressing but I think you are right. People want to always be right that they fight because of that, to defeat someone more than really to look for the truth. And that's one of the main reasons why intolerance exist. ALVARO

Yes, with the intolerance usually comes hate. Seems there are so many lessons for people to learn. Maybe hugs should be required with all religious discussions. Wait, that won't work because then they probably won't talk at all. No matter how ugly it might get, there is learning in that interaction. It can be unsettling to watch. WE can only point them in the right direction every chance we get. Kids must walk on their own. Maybe we can get them started.

If we discover truth then aren't we then dedicating ourselves to it by belief? And if we have the truth, don't we want everyone else to find the truth also? And if that's so, is it really a contest? It isn't right to set the discussion up as though these are two opposite ends of the spectrum, they are not.

Are they really the same?? A truth might be a belief, however a belief will not always be the truth. If one values beliefs, one must realize they do not always have the truth. Truth should never be compromised. On the other hand, many arguments about religion have nothing to do with neither beliefs nor the truth.

You go too far to think that I meant that they are the same. I agree that the truth should never be compromised but I was only making the point that you can't say these two are opposites. There is no point in faith unless there is truth behind it but, as you correctly point out, a belief cannot necessarily equal truth just because there is the existence of belief. This is a case where (If A then B -but- If B then not necessarily A).

Discovery of the truth is the ultimate thing, but you know even that can be influenced by others, since you are discovering something based on what others have to say, for example all the religious stuffs that you talk about, people who argue has to come to a conclusion based on the aspects that are discussed right? So what ever truth you are discovering is still not the ultimate thing unless God himself comes down and shows you whats right and whats wrong. It all matters on your perspective of seeing things.

Very good point!! Truth should be more than faith or words. We must all be willing to venture into undiscovered country to discover the truth for ourselves. Though some things told to us will be the truth, we should never blindly accept them regardless of how good they make us feel until we discover for ourselves.

I was very religious as a youngster. I sang in the church choir, taught Sunday-school and never missed church, wondering all the time if it was real, or just a fad. Finally after much study, I followed my inner feelings and walked away, never to return. It was hard to do, but I knew it was the right thing, and now, after more than 60 years I know it was the right move. I believe that Religion is a Great Scam that has made the Catholic Church the wealthiest business the world has ever seen. No one can even estimate the incredible wealth stolen, the innocent people murdered, and the blameless children molested,in the last 2000 years, all in the name of Jesus the Christ, and God the father!

One can learn a lot about human nature through religion. Not through their holy books, it's through their actions. There is big money being pulled in through the name of God. I guess it's more than a contest when millions of dollars are involved. Yes, it's human nature as in GREED!. The sad part is that they are hurting many people in their process. I run into wounded people all the time. WE must help those we can along the way. For some, it takes a lifetime to get their heads on straight again. WE can be just big rocks for someone to sit on and rest when the turmoil gets to be too much for them. If they take time to ponder, things will start to become clear.

Thought provoking discussion bird. :) Why do we always want others to look at things from our angle? It is one thing to want others to look at things from our angle when we are wronged, it is another thing to want such gregarious stuff for the sake of "winning". Where is the unwritten law that the more people who follow you makes your belief the right one? Another thought that came to my mind..there are a lot of uneducated daily wage earners in my country, above them are people who are lucky enough to find employment in homes like my maid. This class is also fairl large but not as large as the uneducated daily wage earner. The pyramid goes up with the number of educated people and professionally qualified people being fewer in numbers. So if I were to look at religion in those lines, and if there were more people following the religion, then chances are that it is the lower strata of the society who dont really comprehend the things! I wish people would not put religion and god in boxes and brand them. Gods must be feeling stifled in there.

When I think of what I believe and what others believe I don't look at it as a challenge to who is right and who is wrong winner or loser. I agree with you that it is like that with many people. I live my life the way I see it best for me and raise my children to hopefully follow that path but like any parent hope for better for them. My ex-husband is very much the type of person that feels good about himself when he can strip someone of their faith and leave them wondering. I don't hide what I have faith in but I don't shove it off on someone else either. I personally think that with religion one person's truth may not be another person's. I strongly believe in what I do, but it is not my place to judge what is right for someone else. For me it's not a contest but again like you said for many people it is unfortunately.

Yes, it should be about truth rather than stripping others of their beliefs. Truth can open eyes and shatter beliefs, however it should be the base which we should all choose not to live without. When it's only about games, competitions and winning, people just get hurt.

It depends upon you if you are to believe if it's just a contest. It's a contest of faith, not a contest over religion. It's about what you believe and it wikk be all worth it. :)

Perhaps it's more of a contest of being right. When one is right over others, they can see themselves as better. Religion can be big at trying to convince people they are better or worse than others. Of course, in God's eyes, we are all equally special.
