Employees feeling entitled

I run a call center and I have a few agents that feel entitled to anything and everything. They make it hard to accomplish anything and brings morale down. For example, a trip was given away for free and one person wanted to be sure that airport parking was included (it was not) They would have to spend 20 dollars on parking. I just don't get it.Does this happen where you work too? How do you deal with it?

I think this happens in every office. There are always some people who feel that something is missing and then there are those who always feel something is happening. The key is often to identify such elements and then either through counseling or through sometimes stringent measures put these elements in their right place. I remember that once in my team I had such a person and despite repeated hints things were not changing. One day, I had a one on one with the person and confronted him on this type of behavior and enquired the thought process behind it. Suddenly the person realized that this could actually be something that people observe and might come in his career growth prospects and then there was a marked change in his approach.
But of course, each individual is unique and so you would need to deal with each individual differently.
Cheers!

It's hard dealing with a large group or team of employees. Everyone has their own character and quirks that make them unique. Some just make me shake my head in disbelief. lol.

Well, I don't, nor have I ever ran a call center or anything else. And a call center position is exactly what I'm looking for. But I just had to comment on this because I hear so much about this. With this economy, do they know how lucky they are to even have a job, let alone one that gives free trips. My girlfriend is a CNA and that job is hard enough as it is, but it makes it even harder when people call in sick which happens all the time. Does that happen to you? Even before this bad economy hit, I always showed up to work every day and on time. I really feel like I would have that attitude, if oyou don't like the way I run things, go out and just try to find another job.

You are very right! In this economy, jobs are hard to come by. That is why I do not understand griping about petty stuff. People do call in sick or late a lot and then it affects our telephone service levels for our customers. The other agents then become over worked - so no one wins! I hope you find something soon.

What I did with my team was that I put them into groups and pitted them against each other. Team with the most attendance infractions or with the lowest performance scores treats everybody to a team dinner by the end of the month. Our company doesn't offer much benefits, so there really wasn't anything for them to really work towards keeping. It was so successful. Everyone was keeping tabs on everyone else making sure they were up on time to get to work.

Wow I think if I won a trip to anywhere I could sport for the parking at the airport or find another means to get there w/o having to pay the parking fee's. Some people are just hard to please.

Exactly. Cannot please everyone I guess but they need to think before they ask for more. lol.

Sometimes the only way you deal with people like that is by reminding them of the fact that they have gotten a really good deal, even if parking isn't included! LOL. But if there was one thing I learned at work, especially in the call center industry, all you need is to keep communicating, communicating, and properly setting your employees expectations. Sure you'll hear them look for something more when you offer them something good, but you have to expect that. And let them know exactly what is offered, what is good about it, and that it is not going to change. They'll get over it.

in our case here in the Philippines, employees do strive hard too to be progressive with the aim of making the unit into a success . But the mere fact is that , employer don't ever give some due reward or even just acknowledge the work the en lyres have done. Too bad .....

I can only speak for myself. I give great incentives like extra time off with pay, free airline tickets, free hotel stays, gift cards, etc.

Sometimes I feel that some of my direct bosses just have the nerve... it's not the same case as yours, just similar. Well, I work in media monitoring, which means that we have to type tv and radio shows (mostly news and some political and economical talkshows) in a system. I know they need people who do this properly (proper spelling, research on people's and places' names appearing), but if they see some spelling problems, they send a group email to everyone, and they talk so rudely and foulmouthedly about it that it makes me really sad. No person ever deserves being called names (even if they did it anonymous) and public humiliation-and they don't do their jobs perfectly, either. They even misspelled some people's names themselves in a mail they sent us. Also they always complain about some people who change their shift schedules later, and tell them how mornic they are, but they also did their shift changes in the last minutes not once and not once (my fave was the one when we got a message 2 hours before the shift that it's going to be postponed by an hour, because XY asked for it, not even saying they are sorry. Some people just think that they are better than anyone...

I agree. While there are many employees who take things for granted and ask for more than they should, there are also employers that can be just as bad. Without us employees, there would be no company. I had a new manager that came in who was really bad and despite my trying as hard as I could and the length of time I was there, I was eventually let go. I never was told when I did a good job and when and when customers complimented me, but boy did she let me know and write me up for every mistake I made. I call that negative managing.

What they are entitled of they should be given. What they are not then there is none. I am usually friendly with my juniors but when it comes to work and company policies, I am pretty strict with my principle and I always let them know that it is not something that is negotiable. As for a free trip like you mentioned, if a staff insists that the parking be included, I will just ask him if he wants to go or not. Period.
