Trading cable for streaming services

We moved into our house a little over a year ago, and made a conscious decision to not subscribe to cable. Netflix is our main source of television, as well as whatever comes in on the antenna. Between those and our busy schedules, there is absolutely no reason for us to subscribe to a cable service of which we'd only enjoy ten or so channels. As for internet, we have high speed DSL, which these days is as fast as cable and can stream enormous files instantly. News reports in the last year have described cable companies feeling the pinch of losing subscribers. I say, they should make a fairer price offer, and maybe I'd consider going back. Netflix is really changing the game...

May I ask the speed of your internet service? Data rate in the western part of the world are quite larger than here. Here, the fastest speed in a normal residential area would be 2Mbps but I think this is shared. But this year, 3 - 10 Mbps will be offered but it will be expensive for sure.

I actually don't know how fast it really is in numbers, I just know it's super fast and instant. Sorry!

I've been lucky. To cut costs, I downgraded my cable service to just local channels which for me means, Scranton, Allentown, and some of New York and Philadelphia. However, when they changed my service, they put a filter in the line to the TV in my living room. That means my TVs in the bedroom and sun room still get cable channels. Its a bit inconvenient because I like to have the TV on when I;m on the computer and my PC is in the living room. But then I use Netflix on that set.

That's a good idea. Cable should never be an obligation, in my opinion! It's an optional bill, like credit cards.

I think you are right...instead of raising the prices all the time maybe they should consider stepping back and giving everyone a deal for a change...they have raised it recently here and took off some of our channels too! That definately isn't fair!

Let me guess, they took away channels you actually LIKE, too!

I was thinking about this myself I hardly ever watch t.v. and what I do watch I can just as easily watch online so there is no need for me to be subscribed to a cable company. When I do move (as I live with family again) I won't worry about getting cable at all as like you said there are much cheaper alternatives.

Definitely! and all new TVs are HD, you only need a cheap antenna which doesn't even have to be unsightly :)
