Inherited my husband's ipod, wearing out - trading it or not.

My husband bought one of the first ipods to put all his radio plays on plus all of Harry Potter novels. Well oops but before he died, he forgot to tell me his password so that I could not save them to my computer and rename it - I really liked listening to the old radio plays because I remember a few back in the fifties before tv came more common. Now I have to search for them on the internet again. But the problem is that the battery is starting to wear down, and we do not have an Apple Store close by. The thing is that once in a while, our local Best Buy and Future have a trade in sale where one can trade in their old Ipod, Itouch, or whatever on a new more uptodate version. So I am debating whether to just get the battery and keep it or trade it in on a new ipod the one with a larger category. I seem to fill up things quite easily. There is hardly any room left on my iphone - photos of grandchildren and family history, if you get my meaning.

I'm trying to get what you were saying here. Your late husband ipod and your iphone is 2 different thing ? and does family history stuff is on your iphone right ? So, the only thing in the ipod is the radia play and the harry potter novel ?

I do have the Harry Potter shows on Cds, because my husband bought them, but most of the radio plays he downloaded from the internet and he joined a web site and paid a subscription fee for that. There are also some other novels, mostly Louis L'Amour and I do have a whole set, but he also had to pay for them - he belonged to Audible. I have an Audible membership but have not downloaded it. The trouble with Audible is that you have to buy a certain program to convert it into the Apple Format. I do have Cds but they have paper backing on it and that does not work on the Macbook because the paper makes the CD too big to go into the slot. So if I want to save them and put them on my machine and eventually my iphone and replace them on the ipod, I have to get someone to put them on their Windows CDrs without a paper backing, then have to put them in the cd slot of my computer, convert them to the Apple book format and then put them back on the ipod. I have music and different things in my iphone. Trouble is because I have a different name and password then what my husband had, I could not transfer his radio plays etc. to my computer. I had to either change my name and password to his, then put his stuff on, and remove all my cds and novels and music, then get all my cds and reinsert them and of course I could not put in the cds my husband had because they had paper sticking on them.

Well, it seems that you have the backup for the stuff inside the ipod, the only problem is your Macbook. My suggestion is to trade the ipod if you think you can't get the password that you don't know. Or, buy the battery if you know how to replace the ipod battery after you can get passed the password. If you decide to sell, all you have to do is search for a PC that can play your CD with the stuff you are talking about and copy it into a flash drive, there must be a PC somewhere like your neighbor, siblings or just go to the internet cafe. And problem solved.

My sons do have laptops so I could give some of the CDS and get them to copy them. I cannot see buying a new iPod since I already have an iPhone and an iPad so I can listen without having to put speakers besides them. I was thinking of getting he iPod Touch but then even though I do have enough air mile points to get one, I would rather use the air miles in case we have to go to P.E.I. to see my sister-in-law or on a cruise and that seems unlikely to happen unless someone wants to drive me all the way to the port at Halifax.

I would check out the price of a new battery against the trade in price to upgrade to a new one and if it makes sense to get new but if you feel sentimental over it because was late husbands replace battery. Huggles Ellie :D

I would have to ship it to Apple itself and that would take some weeks or maybe a mnth before getting it back and since it is the original ipod and not the new ipod that has more space, my husband had a lot of cds of radio plays like Fibber Magee and Molly, The Shadow, Superman, the old Gunsmoke, etc. - I could go on, but he could not put all them on as it did not have enough space. Me I am more into music and mysteries and photos.

It is the original iPod - the one my husband had. I also have an iPhone with an iPod on it. The original iPod was a bit more complicated because you had to turn round the menu and then go up and down. Even my husband had a hard time with it and he wa good at fixing electricity and when he could no longer move his fingers because of his als, I found it hard to move from one section to another. Me? If the iPod touch held the same amount or more, I would go with the iPod touch. And I suppose their batteries are easier to change and you do not need to ship them off to Apple to do so.

I don't know about ipods or iphones either, but with cellphones, the batteries are as expensive as upgrading to a new phone. For me, that would what I would base the decision on. Keep in mind that you'll probably have to buy a new one sooner or later because yours will become obsolete and won't work with anything else. You should be able to transfer your things from one to the other. If you buy a new one, ask about that.

Hm. It looks like you'll eventually lose everything on there anyway, unless you can figure out a way to copy them onto something else. Got a teenage hacker around handy?

Do not have any hacker around. I could get my sons to copy the Cds, but then I will have to buy some more cps. I could remove the labels, but that would also mean removing the data on the Cds. I tried that with some cps I had and lost part of the songs as well.

Idid and in order to transfer them, I would need my husband's password, but I do not have it and he did not write it down. I do have the cds but they all have paper labels except for a couple.

If you get a new battery, that's awesome. If not, I'd resign myself to the fact that the thing is now "electric." Get a sync cord, and an adapter (USB in one end, electrical plug in the other) and listen to it plugged in. I would not want to trade it in and lose all those old plays, before I could find them again.

You have to ship it back to Apple. I asked my more Apple savy friends if I could put the radio plays on my computer, but then I needed to know the password which I did not, so I deleted them and put my own stuff on it plus I did find a couple of radio plays from the internet as well as some Cds that had not had any paper cd label on it. So I have to start looking for the plays on the internet or get someone to copy the paper label cds for me.

I am a clutch I have to go to my sons and get them how to do it. I have absolutely little electronic skills . Why it takes me a while to change a battery.

Well, you can always buy the batter replacement off ebay and search a video on youtube on how to replace it. Like i did on my ipod touch, because most ebay seller that sells battery replacement for ipod would include the stuff to open it up as well.

That would be a good idea rather then the others just donate it to someone else.

You can often get a rebate when you want to trade up because Apple will usually just strip them down and sell them for less.

It needs a new battery and also it had my husband's radio plays he downloaded on it, plus the novels he liked. Also I did not know his password, so could not transfer them on my computer. It is also the 120 gig version, not the new one so it could to get all his radio plays and novels on. I have the radio plays on cps, but they have paper labels and that makes them too wide to go into the slot at the side of my Macbook Pro. It was not run over by a car or dropped from a thirty story building if that is what you are thinking. You also can consider that since then Apple has made it much easier in the iPhones and possibly the iPod Touch to search through the media for songs, etc. I am considering it up and would want an Itouch or something where I would not have to wear an ear piece all the time to hear it unless I am going on a walk.

Hi Suspenseful, I would trade it in and I would ask them if there was any way to download the photos and the family history to a CD. If that's possible and I think it is, then I'd do that and then just do a trade in. It would be a shame to lose all those pics but really, they aren't going to do you much good on that old Ipod and if the battery goes then you'll never see them again anyway. I would just talk to them.
