I've come across social networking sites similar to facebook except that it has a specific niche. An example of one I've seen is a networking site for surf boarders. Would you sign up and join such networking site to interest with people with the same interest? Why?

I joined Zurker some time ago and its a nice site. What makes it different from other sites is that it works as a cooperative. Its funded by users and has a Vshare system as they call it. If people sign under you you get a Vshare for each person that signed under you and if you help fund the company with cash you get one Vshare for each dollar that you invested. The company aims to grow with the help from its users and Vshares will be converted into shares of stock one the company allocates a million of them. The site needs some work but the concept is amazing it is an invitation only site until all vshares are allocated. They are not niche specific but the cooperative aspect of it takes it to a niche on its own. I hope the site does well, they do open book accounting so that all users can see what is happening with the money. Its growing steadily, slow but steadily. I expect the site to grow exponentially over the next year as more users start inviting friends and family.

I see. Basicly what the site does is something like you invest in it and have shares of the site?

Well you can invest and get Vshares or you can send friends through your invitation link and if they open and account you also get a Vshare for each person or friend that signs through your link. In other words the site is not only about investing in it. They need active people in the site for it to grow so they reward members that invite others with shares in the same way. For example; if you invest $10 in the site you get 10 Vshares but instead if you get 10 referrals you also get 10 Vshares. Investing money is not really necessary. After 1000000 shares are allocated they will incorporate the company and Vshares will turn into real shares making users and investors that have shares in the company into real shareholders in the company. As for the site, its a regular social site so it doesn't follow a particular topic. Just the normal share photos, status updates and stuff. Similar to Facebook I guess.

I might join that kind of social networking site for instanse if I found a social networking site about travelling, reading or art. I think that it would be interesting to talk to people who share my interests. If it was a social networking site where the topic was travelling we could exchange experiences and advice about the different places and I am sure that I would be able to learn something from that. If the topic was reading we could discuss books and authors. If the topic was art we could discuss different kinds of art, different techniques etc. I wouldn't spend all of my time on a site like that, but I think it could be interesting to visit it every once in while.

It's not a bad idea. It could get lots of people with the same interests, but it wouldn't last much. People isn't interested in socializing with people that like the same music they do, or people who practice the same sports. You can do it in any social network like facebook. Now, what people is looking for, is a network where you can find your real friends (the ones you know phisically) and also add new friends. Anyway, I'd love a social network made only for people that enjoy reading. Sharing points of view and talking about books, that's definetely somethin I'd like to see on the net.
