Hi all... This is my very first discussion topic. I certainly hope there are responses to it.. :-)
The question I want to put to all you friends is this - would it be easier to follow the IPL matches if the tournament was formatted in a different way? What I mean is if the format was set up on the same lines as the FIFA World Cup or EURO 2012, would it be easier to track the teams' progress if they were divided into different groups? What's your say? I mean, currently all the nine teams are clamped together & they have Home & Away matches. It does get a little difficult to follow the tournament. If any of you have any other suggestions for different tournament formats, lets hear them... :-)

congrats for starting the discussion. so you responded to many to start a fresh discussion on a relevant topic. i think as long as the topic is of interest to many, people would respond. or should i say as long as people have knowledge about the topic they would revert to you discussion.

Apologize for such a long delay in replying to your response. But, I was gathering "intelligence" on how the EURO & FIFA World Cup matches are played as far as soccer/football is concerned...
A general idea of the FIFA & EURO tournaments - There are a lot of countries involved in these tournaments. So, they generally have Qualifying matches against each other. Based upon the results/points of the qualifying matches, the countries are placed in Groups for the next stage of these tournaments - Group matches. During the group matches, every country in the group plays against the other countries. For example, Group A has 6 countries, each country plays against the remaining 5 countries. This goes on until the Group stage is complete. The positions of these countries in the Groups are determined by the number of points they have earned during the Group matches. These countries move on to the next stage (Quarter-Finals) which are basically elimination stages. From here on, countries that lose are eliminated. From the Quarter-Finals, tournament moves to the Semi-Finals & finally, the two best countries play against each other in the Finals.. That's how its done!! :)

I think the current format is very big and it should be most probably divided into two like around 20 to 30 days cricket and after two or three months the next 20 to 30 days of cricket. Sometimes it gets bored with too much cricket. The problem is that one cannot get cricket after the IPL ends for 10 months. I think it would be nice to have two set of IPL cricket.

Apologize for the delay in responding... Busy life!! :-) Anyway, I think that having two stages of IPL would be a little difficult. There is a huge amount of money involved in this tournament. Also, the players might not be available for both the rounds as they do have commitments to their national teams as well... But, I still think there could be a change in the IPL format... Thanks for your response.

I dont see any problem in the current format and i think there is no need of change in the current format. In this format all in home and away matches. If they grouped together then some group will have more stronger teams and other groups should have weaker teams. In grouping structure one or two bad matches will judge the fate of the team but in current format they will get more chance to come back. I think this is needed as due to national matches some key players are available only for few matches. So current format is better.

Despite the fact that the current IPL matches are a little difficult to follow, I see your point about the strong & weak teams being divided as well as the availability of the players of the respective National Teams.... The current format does give a good chance for teams to come back as well. Thanks for responding..

I think the current format is good enough, turning it in to different groups like it's done in other tournaments wouldn't be nice in IPL.
But it's a fact that there are too many matches to follow up and every matched cannot be watched by everyone.
I find the current format good enough as gives a fair chance to every team ...
