Late last night I received very sad news from a site I have been visiting daily since June 2008; Winster.com is closing its doors forever as of May 31, 2012.
I have earned many wonderful prizes for Amazon.com gift certificates there and just recently they changed their policy to exclude Amazon.com prizes but I was still going to remain as I enjoyed playing and could still cash out for Sees.com, alas they have been forced to close their doors permanently.
Here is the letter I received from the founder, Winnie Winster:
"Dear Friends and Fellow Players,
I’m afraid I have some sad news. After nearly eight years, unfortunately the time has come when we must close Winster. I’d like to take a moment to review with you where we have been, what we plan to do, and why this is necessary.
I fondly remember that sunny day when my hubby took me to lunch, and together we dreamed up the idea of games where people played with each other, rather than against each other. We thought it might be fun to build a web site based on this notion and see what happened.
Well, let me tell you – running an internet game site is a lot harder than it looks! We started in our garage and after several tries came up with our first game: Chain Gang. It was an instant hit, and quickly grew to thousands of regular players. But soon people wanted more – more games, a way to win prizes, a way to make lists of their friends and invite them to play, greeting cards for special occasions, gifts, memberships with special privileges … the list goes on and on. So over the years we worked diligently to add new games and features until we built the Winster you know today.
It’s hard to imagine now, but back then Facebook was just getting started, and ‘social games’ didn’t even exist! Since then, just about everything you could conjure up has happened at Winster – people have found true love, helped each other through difficult times, reunited with lost relatives, travelled thousands of miles to visit their Winster friends, even held annual reunions with favorite players. I remember enlisting our kids to help mail out the Gold Member mouse pads, and posting a picture on our "About Us" page. Take a look and consider that two of those little sweetie-pies are now in college!
But all good things must come to an end eventually, and Winster is no exception. We simply can’t continue to operate the web site in its current form. The resources and effort required to run the servers, distribute prizes, and support our staff are just too much to bear. Can you believe we make all this happen with the help of just six dedicated people? Our hardworking staff was brokenhearted when we told them the news, but I want you to know they are committed to ensuring a smooth conclusion for all our treasured players.
So here’s the plan:
Starting with the first day of May, 2012, we will stop charging our Club Winster Members their usual monthly fee. If you are a Member in good standing on that day, you will continue to receive your Membership benefits through the end of May, regardless of your normal charge date. For example, if you would normally pay for your monthly membership on May 15, you can continue to play as a Member through the end of the month without charge.
May 31, 2012 will be the last day that the Winster web site will be available. That will also be the LAST DAY to cash in your points to claim a prize, and also the LAST DAY to enter your Claim Code on the Winster web site to receive your prize. It is VERY IMPORTANT to understand that the web site will no longer be available after that date, and there will be no way for you to request or receive any prizes, or for us to arrange to send you any prizes, after the web site is turned off. So please, to avoid any unpleasant surprises, be sure to collect your prizes as soon as possible!
That said, from now until the end of May, you can continue to play and purchase Day Passes, gifts and hats in the Winster Gift Shop if you wish. We also plan to run a final Charity Challenge, starting in early May, in case you prefer to donate your excess points to a good cause.
I want you to know that it has been an honor and a privilege for all of us at Winster to get to know you and to serve you for all these years. I especially want to thank our hard-working Hosts, who have volunteered their time to make others feel welcome, and also our long-time players for their endless patience during our many growing pains (especially our first Member Marlys, who has played nearly every day since February 17, 2006)! I hope that you have enjoyed our time together as much as I have, and that you find happiness and prosperity in your future endeavors. And always remember the precious lesson we at Winster have learned from this experience -- that the best way to live a rich and rewarding life is to help others achieve their chosen goals!
Sincerely,
Winnie Winster"
So, I am now fervently earning as many points I can earn so I can do my final cash out before losing my points forever. I have made many friends through the years and will miss this outlet I had for so many years. It was one of the ways I had my "me time" while the kids were at school and I could earn a little too.
R.I.P. Winster.com we will all miss you...
Have a nice day and happy myLotting!!!

I think that discontinuing Amazon prizes was the final nail in the coffin for them. I lost 200 out of 505 friends within a few days of Amazon announcement. They lost a lot of players during the cherry game debacle--but somehow survived. I think this 2nd loss was too much for them.
Another thing is that they recently started censoring the facebook page. There are only good comments now. No one could express any dissatisfaction. This basically destroyed the sense of community, because there was no longer any discussion.
The games were fun. Even the greedy people and the robbers were good for a laugh. Sometimes I laughed so hard that my eyes were tearing. I met a lot of people that I would be interested in continuing friendships with. Also got some very good prizes.
Most of the upgrades they spend time and money on were silly. Instead of fixing the continuous problems like lag and sign-in issues, they devoted time and money to silly and juvenile trophies, balloons, and greeting cards. The wheel of winster was the only worthwhile upgrade they ever had.
They were foolish to keep giving more privileges to the free members. I was paying, but eventually realized that there were no longer many benefits to membership. I actually got more spins as a non-member. I am sure they lost a lot of revenue due to this. Their answer was to raise membership rates and make the prizes less of a value. This created a cycle of losing members and trying to take away from the current members. Their demise is not too surprising.

I don't think they treated their members as well as their non members, that's for sure. And I did notice that they edited all the posts on Facebook to only reflect positive posts. I don't even think the Facebook page is even on Facebook any more.
Thanks for your comment and have a great day!!!

I think that's awesome that you found some friends through Winster! I did too and am now friends with them on Facebook. We help each other with saving money or trying to find sites to earn online. It's funny how sometimes things work out that way.
Thanks for your comment and have a great day!!!

I used to love that site and had a lot of great friends there. It got to the point it wasnt fun anymore with all the lagging. It just wasnt worth the frusturation. They had a great idea going and I still would have played today if it wasnt for the hassle. Maybe someone will step in and create a site like them after reading reviews.

What sad news, schulzie; I love Winster.com. I do not get to play as much as I'd like. The friends you meet there are awesome and incredibly helpful. I do have a few points banked there, so I suppose I'd better get playing so I can cashout before they close forever. This is really sad news.

It is so and I have to say that even though the site has been gone for over a month now, I still miss it and find myself accidentally typing the web address to the site from time to time. I was a daily player as well and I miss the prizes that I was earning from them.
Of course, not having winster in my life has meant that I have been able to dedicate more time to other sites that I've been active on, including mylot.

Yes, it did free up ALOT of time in the day, didn't it? But I do miss playing on there. It was fun while it lasted...
I am trying to come on here more often, but I am finding other things to do with my time that are actually not on the computer.
Thanks for your comment and have a great day!!!

I seen that. I haven't been playing much. It lagged too much for me most of the time. I did keep going back now and then. It is sad.

I tried playing at Winster before but their site was also so lagging for me. Also they raised the points you had to earn for their prizes and then got rid of the Amazon gift certificates. It was good while it lasted but I guess they are just one of the latest dot coms to go by the wayside.
