he thought he was going to run into Venus! Okay, he thought Venus was another plane. That really doesn't make me feel one whit better. Who mistakes a planet for a plane???
Then there's the pilot that went nuts recently because he sees terrorists everywhere.
Folks want to know why I no longer fly. It's because it's getting more dangerous and it's the pilots making it that way!
Have past events finally taken their toll on them? Do you feel safe in the air? Have you stopped flying? Will you stop flying?
In the instance of the first pilot, he says he was groggy from lack of sleep. When he saw the planet Venus, he thought another airplane was headed toward him, so he went into a deep nosedive. Many passengers did not have their seatbelts fastened and were slammed forward. They could have been seriously hurt.
Frankly knowing that our pilots are so sleepy that they can't tell a planet from a plane scares the cr@p out of me.

Yikes!! I hope that this pilot is grounded and does not get another chance to fly with anybody, until his 'headspace' is examined and be re-certified to fly again. The world cannot afford to have another aircraft disaster occurring because a pilot either has 'double vision experience, or a flux of the mind.

It's a stressful enough job for them to do without adding to it sleep deprivation and the idea of some passengers not bothered at all about reaching the airport alive..

It seems as though pilots are becoming a bit unhinged lately. Whether it is too many hours in the air or fear of terrorists, something seems to be nibbling at them.

True comments being made by both of you mylotters. But given the specialized job, the 'system must impress its collective will' on these professionals so that all potential lapses in judgement encountered by these pilots -whether it is human or mechanical in origin, or both- must be avoided at all costs, or else the world wiil have to bear the unfortunate consequences for ever!

Why was this Pilot so sleep deprived in charge of a planeload of passengers would be a more important consideration than the widest "Near Miss" in Airline history... Was the Copilot asleep? Any flight I've been on,the crew will tell you when you're in your seat or asleep to keep your belt at least lightly fastened,in case of air turbulence (or some situation like this happening..) preventing you bouncing off the ceiling..
In the search for UFO's,Atmospheric and Astronomical "activity" has been reportedly responsible for many a misidentification..it wouldn't be the first time Venus has been blamed for something up there.I'm just glad they weren't flying AT 400 feet when this happened..

Evidently, this happened to an Australian pilot several months ago and has just been reported on this news. It is frightening to have pilots hallucinating from lack of sleep. Unlike truck drivers they can't just pull over to a rest stop and catch a few z's.

I thought that was why commercial flights carried more than one Pilot-to back up the other guy so that there was always one well rested Person in Control?
