Ok.. day 8 of being sick. So I have officially been unwell for over a week! Nightmare.. But this discussion is about coughs and remedies! I have been drinking cough medicine like it is going out of fashion, and nothing seems to be shifting it! The worst part is, I’ve had to alternate between chesty cough medicine, because it is a very chesty, very sore cough, and ticky cough medicine, because it is that also. Does anyone know any other ways to get rid of a cough? And what do you think of this?

It's day 8 and you haven't mentioned 'doctor' in your post. I think you're wasting time and energy because you decided not to consult with your physician in the first place. I don't usually take cough medicines because it's all about phlegm and if I could just take it out then that will be fine with a lot of liquids or water. But once the cough takes a long time and the phlegm is yellow-colored or green, then my doctor would usually give me something for it. Some coughs are allergies and some are symptoms of another disease. It's always best to seek medical attention with the right people before it's worst. If you're going to compute the costs, the longer you self-medicate, the higher the expenses. The expenses I'm talking about here also includes the sleepless nights and not performing well because of the cough. Not to mention the spread of disease to your family-members. So, take it to the doctor friend. All for the best. Have a great MyLot experience ahead!

Oh, so it's something that you regularly have? Perhaps you have asthma? Anyhow, yeah drinking lots of liquid helps soften the phlegm at the same time soothes the throat from too much coughing (ever notice that hard coughs taste like blood soon? It's causing an abrasion on the throat, that's why). Could it be because of the weather changes? I know of a friend who can't stop coughing and having colds because of weather changes.

Hello! Thanks for the comment. Actually I have seen the doctor. Well spoke to the doctor. On monday I called my doctors surgery and spoke to my doctor. I'm allergic to penicillin, so he could not give me anti-biotics, as the most effective course of anti-biotics for a chest infection/cold is amoxicillin, which contain penicillin so I couldn’t take them. It was actually the doctor who wrote me a script for the first cough bottle, and a pack of cold and flu tablets lol.. so I haven’t been self-medicating.. well I have been giving myself the dosage lol, but it is doctor prescribed lol! Thank you for your concern though, and I really appreciate your comment. Can I ask, does drinking a lot of fluids help when you have a cold/cough?

Oh and I'll just add, I'm very prone to chest infections and my doctor is aware of that, hence speaking to me on the phone and not having to see me :)

8 days is long for a cough. A friend who is a pharmacist likes to say that a non treated cough lasts 7 days, while a treated one lasts only 1 week.

I hate to say this, but response #3, More Water and response #4, Quit Smoking will help a lot..But knowing how hard it is to quit, maybe just focus on more water. I am sorry you can't easily purchase the apple cider vinegar, though I have a slight cough and my sinuses are still a little clogged, I am feeling much better after having a couple cups of the vinegar/honey tea yesterday. I also had made a smoothie with beets, strawberries, blueberries, organic yogurt, and an orange, (don't laugh, this is packed with vitamins and my husband who absolutely hates beets, liked my smoothie) The original recipe actually called for almond milk, but I didn't have any and I think yogurt is a great product when one is sick.

Yes, carmela is right, i have tried that too without the blue berries but it worked. Also oregano leaves i good for softening the phlegm making it esy to cough out. you just have to boil the leaves and drink the concoction. You can also boil ginger and drink the water just like ginger ale. You have to take this at least 3 x a day. I would repeat what others said, quit smoking and drink plenty of fluids.

Thanks guys!! well i took a lot of vitamin C! blueberries, oranges, even some apples.. and took my cough bottle less often, but more regular, if you know what I mean, and i seem to be on the mend now! The funny thing is, now everyone around me seems to be getting sick, so it must have been some sort of bug going about that my crappy immune system seemed to defend for a shorter time than everyone else lol!

When a cough persists, it is time to consult your doctor. In my case, I know when I would need antibiotics for a cough. Antibiotics kill the source of the cough.

i can't take them though.. which sucks. thanks though, i'm all better now :)

Hope this is not too late. In my country there is such thing as ginger brew that we can buy from the market. It helps relieve a lot of diseases and i've proven it worked well on my colds, flu, and of course cough. I'm not sure if you that there but if you don't, old people just boil ginger but i don't really have any idea how they do it. Hope you'll get better soon Princess!

You should not let that go unattended, 8 days is too long as a week's cough is dangerous. Why not go to the doctor as the medicines you are taking are not effective for you anymore. It can be pneumonia, tuberculosis, bronchitis, i am not scaring you but we must be aware of such..take care and go to the doctor

..not scaring me? haha if i had of seen this, i would have been scared lol! I'm all better now, but you have certainly scared me into doing something about my cough sooner in future! lol!

Aw, I hope you feel better soon! Being sick is awful. I don't know if they have it where you are but a medicine (natural remedy) called Colloidial Silver is what I always take when I am not feeling well. It helps so much and gets rid of many illnesses. If you do not have it near you I would say plenty of fluids (water preferably) and rest. I really hope it goes away soon and you feel better! =)
