CD sales down, Digital sales up! Is this good or bad?

Yesterday it was revealed that sales of music CDs were down by 25% whilst 33% of albums are not bought digitally on the internet. For me this is good news because I have just started my own digital music industry project which aims to put some value back into music (especially digital music). So what do you think? Are you a musician or a fan? Do you think the shift to a digital economy for the music industry is where it's future lies?

android, music is one giant ameba that is ever changing; the more high tech, the better for the music recording industry. Right now the niche is digital recordings, who knows what it will be in the future; whatever it turns into, it will be even more technical. With music, you have to follow the flow of the consumer crowds; if you give them what they want, they will buy. The marketing trend which reflects going from CDs to digital recorded music is not bad nor good, it is just the reaction of music consumers following technology to the next level. And so it goes....

And what most of them want is free music! Music is not being bought as it's own product any more, it's generally starting to be bundled in with other services so that it feels as though it's free to the consumer. CD sales are down but digital sales DO NOT make up for those losses, they may be on the increase but they are also still very low compared. The internet has devalued music. It can cost £10,000 just to record and produce a single, yet that very same single can be sold for just 79p per copy.

I'm an event organizer; one of the freelance jobs that I'm keeping. And there are both up and downsides about it for me. First to answer your question; I am a FAN. If I love the music; the most convenient for me is to download it. Of course given there are lot of sites out there that offers illegal downloading but what's good about this industry is if all of the songs have digital copies and being bought online; less trash in the environment, less hassle purchasing and all you need to have is either your plastic (credit card) or a code being shared to you to download it safely (like a PIN purchase at stores). It affects me as an organizer because this will be a fresh approach to people when it comes to album launchings and fandoms. Less preparation time and less tasks in transporting the CDs from the artist and more time spending on some media values since marketing can be done online. As quick as that. In an artist's points of view; it will be easier for them to produce musics. No need to get a lot of sponsors. No need for reproducing or burning a lot of CDs whereas there's no guarantee that all of the CD will be purchased. Less costing for production in the artist's/manufacturer's/distributor's side. That's going to be it. Hope it will push everyone to sell their music online. Then sharing them will be easier.

Good answer. It seems to be going towards an attitude of fans.deciding which artists make it and if there's enough demand and therefore funding and security then that artist goes on to record and release.
