"You stole my heart" Or was it my brain that you stole?

"My heart is broken", "My heart is bleeding" "It touched my heart" ......... Heart is getting all the importance while the brain is the one that is responsible for all the emotions that we experience in our day to day life. I would therefore say "My brain is broken", My brain is bleeding" "It touched my brain" Sounds odd but it is true all the same. Right?

lol. Indeed. Our brain is where our emotions comes from. It's just our heart that seemed to ache or react due to what the brain sends to our body. I mean, whenever we feel something, our blood circulation tends to change according to our emotions. I think from that theoretical point, is how the lying detector instrument was made. Please correct me, if I'm wrong.

It's always the brain that's the commander in our body. "That's why it's placed at the top and not below." That's what one of my teachers told us in our class when I was still in high school.

Our blood circulation tends to change for more reasons than emotional upheaval in our life Sin... But yes. Our heart does miss a beat due to emotions but not until the brains orders it to do so! We get butterflies in our stomach too! again not until the brain does its ordering!

Agreed.
And when your hearts beats for someone, you can do nothing but follow it?!Sure. But it's not for someone that my heart beats to. It just wants to go MyLotting right now! So it's not my problem. XD

You are talking about raw emotion and replacing "heart" with "brain" would just be too logical and love is not logical. It would not be as romantic as the "heart". And what would we use for Valentines decorations? Hearts are so much more appealing any angle you look at this from. The heart is so symbolic. When describing a kind person, we say he has a big heart. If we say he has a big brain, well, it just isn't the same. Also...the heart never really breaks and neither will the brain. Nor bleed.

Let's be fair here sid. Just because down the ages heart has been given all prominence it does not mean that the heart in fact is responsible for all the emotions that we experience in our life. It is the brain that control our emotions. Heart in fact reacts depending on our cholesterol levels for example!

At the time of Shakespeare they believed that all of these things originated in the liver. I think it is more likely as you say, a function of our brains. We choose many things with our brain. Some days I am sure my brain is broken.

Imagine someone saying "You stole my liver". Shakespeare had left such an impact on humanity that anything that he professed was the truth and nothing but the truth. People's liver must have been bleeding when he breathed his last!

I do not know if the idea of the liver being the seat of all emotion originated at that time or had been passed down but I do remember discussing some references in my English classes. I think my brain gets broken from too many things that I put in without resolving them.

Hi All, indeed well said and i must agree with you. The brain is always decide what action should be done. But unfortunately, the heart would get the feeling of what is going on around and inside the body. So, both the brain and the heart have done their part, to make our body keep going. We can't stay alive if any of them gone away. They should always work together, to keep our body continue alive. I guess lovers should draw both heart and brain pierced by arrow, for a change...

I was just highlighting the fact that when emotions are generated by the brain why so much is made of the heart but I am a bit vary of piercing the brain with the cupid's arrow as it might lead to severe headaches!

Logically, what you say is right! Even I don't know why we are using it that way... But I guess it could be because of this....
I'm from India. But I hope all over the world people consider the 'Heart' region as the place of life.... even in Yoga, Anahata chakra is for love and wisdom... May be that's why we are using Heart instead of brain for love!!

To be funny, it would look very odd if I place my hand on my head when I propose my love... in that sense also, Heart is the best place!!

That's a good one. I never thought of that. Imagine Jevendiran doing that!. That would really be a 'brain-warming' scene

Our brains do not feel but our hearts do, which is why the heart gets all the credit or the blame depending upon the circumstances. While it is true that the brain might be telling the heart what to do and how to feel, the brain is like the silent puppet-master pulling the strings, and the heart is the one doing the performance.

Emotions actually are felt in our entire body. The next time you are sad or really happy or feeling guilty....pay attention to the parts of your body that actually "feel" these emotions. Your're ability to think is off-kilter,you might have difficulty in swallowing, loss of appetite etc. You feel them in your heart, your gut, your soul, fingernails, hair follicles etc etc.

You really touched my brain by your response purple. Because it set me thinking.. But it is not emotions alone that affect our heart. What about cholesterol. It also affects the heart!

While the human brain remains the control center of our concerns. ,feelings, delights and experiences much gaga has been attributed to the heart as the hub of all emotional concerns. Thus when someone hurts you, it is your heart which is hurt. All feeble sentiments carry with it the connection of heart....perhaps it is the most important human organ .

We certainly have been taken for a ride by involving the heart for the various emotions we experience which is actually the work of the brain. It is too late now for us to think any other way as love, hate, sadness and such emotions have been connected to the heart which if you think deeply is not right. However, it would not sound right at this point in time for us to bring the brain in the picture - How about -
The way to a man's brain is through his stomach or
Have a brain to brain talk?
Sounds odd. Does it not?

Really?? Is the brain really responsible for all the emotions we feel?? Then why does the heart feel weird. And when someone has his/her heart broken, the heart feels empty while the brain feels nothing worst than that.

Your feelings are lodged in the brain and not in the heart. But from eons we have been made to believe that it is the heart that rules when it comes to emotions. It is too late to change this thinking and worse will be to replace the word 'heart' with 'brain' - O.K. Then thatgirl - how about having a brain to brain talk!

Yes, yo may right, but when we say to lover, we will say i love you with all my heart....We wont say i love you with all my brain...lol
From long time, love emotion gos with a heart, even though our brain thinks, not a heart thinks. We don't need to correct it, love and heart accompany together, it sounds romantic too and we just accept it..:)

One needs to do some research about the roots of these expressions involving the heart. It would sound odd though if we replaced the word 'heart' with 'brain' although it may be correct. How do the following sound for example:
brainfelt
brain rending
brain-warming
tug at one's brainstrings
with a heavy brain
your brain's desire

The boss likes to remain invisible, just gives commands to his worker and let it feel the pains and let it be blamed Poor heart.
Thinking about symbols, how nice it would be if young lovers drew bleeding brains shot through with an arrow. Or imagine Cupid shooting people in brain thus making them fall in love.

History is being re written in several places and here too some one might just about think about doing it. But I just wonder if the cupid's arrow shooting through people's brains will lead to severe headaches!

Allknowing, that's a good one indeed! The truth is, you are correct. The heart only performs one function; to pump/circulate blood around the body, while the brain controls all thoughts, and other things.
Even the emotions and the 'so called emotional feelings are not stimulated by the heart; although people try to associate that feeling with the heart. I'm happy that the heart only has one function, because can you imagine it (the heart) controling our emotions? We would not live for ten seconds! The animal kingdom would be extinct!

You are so right. If the heart did what the brain does we would all disappear. Whoever thought of giving credit to the heart for all what the brain does then that entity had no knowledge about how the system really works. This belief however is here to stay and no amount of convincing will make people use phrases such as "I am brain broken" or "my brain goes out for ..." and so on!

Hahahaha i would rather rephrase it which would be more appropriate to criticize.
"The heart which my brain stole from me" because the brain is only responsible for all feelings which you obtain towards your friends , relatives etc.. which causes your heart to get pumped up faster. But when any of your best of relationship break ,your heart feels its pressure which affects your brain and you start feeling sad.So brain steels your heart away from you.:p

The heart only does the pumping work and it fluctuates when it receives signals from the brain. Brain is the place where emotions get created and it sends signals even to the stomach - have you not heard of the saying when one gets butterflies in the stomach?
I am truly brain broken as you have not agreed with my theory!
