why is there such people as dumb?

I made an advertisement regarding our company on-line last week. surprisingly, 3 people just applied on my ads. i texted them and told them that upon reaching our office, tell the hr recruitment and the front desk officer that they were referred by me. a while ago the applicants came to the office, i was glad that they came so i told our boss that i was the one who referred them and that i have their resume. upon asking to the applicants if someone referred them, they said none! darn! i was so humiliated with what they did. i told my boss that i referred them and they said no! but i was the one who did that's why they knew our company. it gave me a bad day. why are here people who doesn't know how to follow directions? urgh!
