Yoga is something I really wanted to try, but never start. I heard about a lot of good things about yoga like how it is a good kind of meditation and how it can make your body relaxed and stronger. Although I do some breathing exercises once in a while combined with meditation, I think meditation has more to offer. Can someone tell me some of the most important benefits of yoga and the simplest ways to start?

I just started doing Yoga recently. I find it very relaxing but most of all I find it gets rid of the soreness and/or stiffness in my body. I have a very physical job and the poses feel soooo good. Anyway, since I checked for local Yoga classes in my area and couldn't find any that fit into my schedule, I order a Yoga dvd online. It's amazing. It's called Rodney Yee's Yoga for Beginners. I really like it because there is an instructional section at the beginning (which is a workout in itself) on how to do all the poses in the dvd correctly.

Well I guess the dvd and the visuals makes all the learning a whole lot easier...and considering the one teaching it on the video is an expert, I presume. I would try to look if they sell yoga dvd in my place. 'Rodney Yee's Yoga'...the title sounds good, so it may be one reason it sells a lot. Maybe they can make yoga dvd for kids and it would be good if it would be in cartoons...hmmm, I might name it 'Yogi Bear's Yoga for kids'...sounds good as well, I guess :D

Yes, it's actually a great idea and I'm planning now to look at DVD stores for them. I know for one that my brother uses DVD for his exercise regime so having DVD for yoga would also do the trick.

Hi,
there are probably books, dvds on the subject. Like Amazon or Ebay or other websites that talk about yoga. It is good that you giving a shot. It does take time to get use to it but it does help the body over all especially your personality is a worried type like me. I like to mediate early in the morning or right before I go bed. I try to think nice thoughts like in the Bahamas, Hawaii etc.. to calm me down.
Thanks and Good luck let us know you are progressing with it and what tips you are learning too.
Sincerely Unique16

Thanks unique16! Anyway, chicgale showed me a link about basic yoga and I would check on that for now. I do like the fact that yoga not only exercises the body, but it also relaxes the mind. Imagining yourself in very calm and beautiful places can surely help, I guess. Well, I really hope I could go to the Bahamas and Hawaii someday :D Thanks you and surely I would let you know how I progress with this.

Thanks chicgale! For now I want to start yoga doing it at home by self-study. Maybe anyone knows a good site online that has the best yoga basics? But maybe later on I might try having actual yoga classes...why not?

I think its best if you enroll in a yoga class, that should be the best way for you to familiarize the routine so later on you can do it yourself. Ive heard it's a really good work out for the mind, body and soul. I'm also looking for a good trainer around town.

I would surely consider that possibility. I would check if there is one near our home. We have a few fitness clubs and I heard some fitness clubs do have yoga classes.

I just started looking for a beginner yoga tape too. I found a DVD with two 15-20 yoga sessions labeled AM and PM to do when you wake up and before bed. It helps wake me up in the morning and calm me down at night. It is a good DVD but I am also looking for more of a work out. Does anyone know of any good DVDs?

For workouts, probably aerobics exercises would be the right one for you as you sweat a lot when doing them. With yoga, I feel it's more focused on making your mind calm while your body gets stronger in the process.

I believe these are the reasons why yoga is such a popular way of meditating as it also affects one's body and health while it relaxes the mind. I am also a bit into mind and body relaxation exercises but I would only guess yoga is a more advanced way of doing it. The mind and body exercise I'm talking about is lying on the bed and tensing every part of the body one by one then releasing the tension. When all parts of your body is already relaxed, you then go into mental visualization of one chosen scene which relaxes you. This letting go of mind and body gives one such a relaxing feeling that you immediately feel better after doing them. For now, I do them only when I remember to do so. Now I think it would be good if I consistently do them everyday, upon waking up and before sleeping.
