Sleepy while Driving

As I go to my work today (to other location from my base), I felt sleepy that my eyes became heavy. I tired to drink iced tea to be awake because it is really dangerous to become asleep while driving. But it does not help. Also, I tried to increase the volume of my stereo but seems no work to counteract. I want to park my car for a while a take a rest for a while but I just keep on thinking that I can make it since it was just a 1-hour drive. Sometimes, I shout or slap my face to make me awake.
To all mylotters, did you also experience the same thing? How did you cope up to this kind of situation?

This is really not a right time to drive. Taking a short nap is necessary, without a enough rest is really result bad. It is better to avoid this kind situation, avoid driving.

As much I want to take a nap, I really need to go to my destination immediately. Thanks for your concern and I'm pretty sure that I will take a short nap or refresh myself when I feel sleepy again.

@arlera, great decision. Sometimes in a long trip like yours, you really need two drivers for 1 car. Drivers will change every time the other feels tired and sleepy.

Oh yah, it happened to me couple of times. One time I fell asleep already and my husband were screaming at me coz I almost hit the ditch.. And now, I don't drive anymore when I feel sleepy. I do a power nap now like 20 mins in my car before driving.

I also experienced that. Im on an expressway (similar to freeway) and I got asleep for a few seconds. Good for me that there are only few vehicles that time. I was really awaken when I saw that my speed is increasing.
Another is that when we got home too late, past midnight, I was suprised that I was driving in the middle of the road. Good for me that there are no vehicles or person crossing the road.

Let me just say, "FINALLY!"
Okay, now that I have gotten that out of the way. Yes, this is a real problem on the road, and often times people don't know it, but sleeping behind the wheel can be dangerous, and in some states, you can get a DUI for doing this.
If you feel the need to go to sleep behind the wheel, then pull over for a minute and sleep because you are no good on the road if you haven't had any shut eye.
Another thing is tea, coffee, or anything that can keep you awake. If you are on a schedule, then do whatever it takes to keep yourself awake.
I had this problem a few times, and a couple of those times, I just pulled over a slept for a while. Other times, I just cranked up the radio and kept tea or coffee next to me because I was on the clock.

I can really pull the car and stop for a while but that time, I really need to reach my destination immediately. What I did is that I just turn the volume of the radio louder. Another is kept on thinking that I am not sleepy for several times, psychological method. hahaha.
It is really dangerous for everyone to fall asleep behind wheels even for a split of a second. You are really having too much risk.
Thanks for your response. I am just curious why you said "FINALLY".

Yes my friend I was almost killed while driving alone with Mr Sleepiness on my side.Like you I was once a traveler before as part of my job. I forced to looked what was the best alternative to fight sleepiness while driving. I found calamansi or lemon fruit is the best. Whenever sleepiness strikes while driving, squeeze one directly on your mouth. The sourness of the lemon keep the sleepiness away. Try it my friend. But, the best idea is for you to have a good sleep (earlier) prior to the date of long driving...take care my friend..

I haven't think of this idea. Next time, I'll try to bring calamansi next time. During that time, I had enough sleep, however, boredom really takes big role in making me sleepy because whenever I had someone with me, I did not felt this even if I had not take enough rest the night prior to driving.
Thanks for the response and suggestion.

It happens to me sometimes also. However it is really dangerous for you and the others people also, especially there are many people going on that street at that time. When being sleepy, i try to sing any sentence of any song, you may think i am mad when do like that, but singing, of course not out loud, keeps me awake...

You are right, fallinf asleep behind wheel could not only taking risk for yourself but you might involve others that are really took care in driving.
Singing, talking to myself as well as increasing the volume of the radio helps a little bit, but when you cannot really fight those falling eyes, I'd rather park the car and take a few minutes nap. Just hoping it will not result to a half an hour or more sleep.

Coffee does not help or have no effect on me. I haven't tried apples. Perhaps, boredome is the great factor that makes me feel sleepy. Thanks for the response by the way.

As a taxi driver I have to cope with being sleepy many times a week :(
Best tricks to avoid being sleepy is to have a good rest-- not my case
Coffee-- always a good help. Some of my fellow drivers prefer RedBull but I don't like it. I drink it when there is nothing left I can do.
Chewing gum-- chewing activates your brain and helps quite good when you are not too tired.
Hope this helps next time you feel like that ;)

Thanks for the other suggestions. Chewing gum? I must try this one the next time I will have a long or even a short drive to make me wake.

Maybe next time, I'll try to park the car for a while and stop. I am just afraid that instead of taking a few minutes nap, I will get asleep for half an hour or so...hehehe

Have you tried massaging your ears? Sometimes helps to keep myself awake. Or even if it's a one hour drive, maybe you can stop half way and get out of the car for a few minutes and move a little bit. Take care, it is dangerous to drive when you are very sleepy.

Next time, I will try to take a few minutes rest halfway or find nearest gasoline station to take a nap or atleast take the restroom and refreshed.
Massaging ears? Yes! I remember from one of the natural healing radio program, they said that pulling your ears upward will help you awake while pulling it downward will help you fell asleep.
Thanks for sharing this!

Generally, driving a car is not highly involved. Sing, studies show that people who sing in the car get in fewer accidents. It's good to keep yourself entertained while driving by listening to music etc. The best thing to do is to get sufficient sleep before your trip. If you get sleepy while driving, GET OFF THE ROAD, park your vehicle side by and get some sleep. The life you save may be your own!!!

I listened to car stereo but it seems no effect. I had sufficient sleep last night. I think I just felt that way because I am alone during my travel. I did not feel that way when I have someone with me. When I was already near my destination, I already felt awaken.
I think I learned a lesson from here, I am the one who will save my own life.
The next time I will feel this way, I'll get of the road and take some nap or stretching.
