cutting boards

I've been annoyed with my cutting board for a long time so I do not use it. My cutting board is glass and it makes this ping/ting like sound with every cut and it's missing a foot. For some reason it really annoys me so I usually cut things on the counter or carfully with just my hands alone.
I was thinking I really need to get a new but good sized cutting board. But what's a good material to choose from? plastic? wood? bamboo?

I had seen seen some thin plastic ones in a set at work. But I wasn't sure if that was a good choice or not.

I would opt for bamboo. It is a sustainable material and better for the environment than the wood, glass or plastic. Bamboo grows like crazy and replenishes itself faster that wood. Plastic frightens me because of the chemicals used to make it. Wood comes from forests that we need for our ecological balance. Glass scares me too because it can break or shatter. I had an oven door explode at me and it was supposed to be made of glass that was shatter proof. After that I am extremely careful with glass in the kitchen.

Often times, I don't like to use the cutting board because it's a nuisance. If you have to use one, then I would go with bamboo.

Cutting boards are necessary if you want to protect your counter! I would not suggest you get a wood cutting board, as they are not really hygienic! They made some good ones these days that look like plastic and they are strong and can be washed too!

I have only ever used wooder cutting boards. I need to change them time to time though because they will be cut up and I don't want those pieces to get in the food. I use at least two of them for different food. Once I cut onions on a wooden cutting board it's hard to get the smell out, everything will taste like onion, so I don't use that one for cutting fruits.

In my own experience and out of the ones I've seen, I honestly have never seen a glass one! But I can just imagine how the ping-ting would be annoying lol. I myself have used the wooden and plastic ones, they're both good. I find they both have pros and cons as well though.
The wooden one stays wet for a while when you clean it and sometimes get marks in it from the knives. Also, my boyfriend mentioned this the other day (because we have a wooden one at the moment). He mentioned how he prefered the plastic ones because he worries that all the bacteria may not come out of the wood cause of it's material and it sort of got me thinking the same thing! Although, if you do chose a wooden one, they still are a good LONG lasting cutting board to have.
The plastic ones clean off really easy and they're smaller (thinner) and they're also very good to use.
I hope this information helped! It may not be completely accurate, it's just my personal experience and opinions on them but I do hope it helped a little in your decision on which to get. They're both good choices, and who knows, maybe the bamboo ones are good as well, I've never used or heard of them personally (that's why I didn't comment on them lol). Wish you all the best of luck and hopefully get to chat in a future discussion :) Thanks for sharing!!

I like plastic, although I don't know how safe it is. Surely small bits of plastic get into the food? Wood scars so fast that it looks bad quickly, although it's probably safer. (I'd rather eat wood than plastic!) I've heard that glass tends to dull knives because there's no give to it when they cut against it, but I've never had a glass cutting board so I couldn't say from experience.

I think if I was buying a new one it would be bamboo. On the other hand many people do not think they are sanitary or can be cleaned. They prefer glass because it can be cleaned better.I have some plastic ones but I feel like they show the cuts a lot.

I have a plastic cutting board about 1/4" thick that I've used for years and years. I don't like wood--I like the look until it gets all cut up! I used bleach and a stiff brush to clean my board so I don't have to worry about food poisoning. I cut my vegetables first and my meat last. It's a great cutting board and best of all, it was cheap!

I would not go with plastic. That's what we have and it's impossible to get stuff out of it cause it's all scratched up and germs and bacteria get stuck in it. Gross! I need new ones too.. just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I know exactly what you mean. I have a big, glass, rectangle cutting board...with little rubber nubs for feet. it looked real nice sitting along side of my sink.
I ended up avoiding cutting on it because of the sound of the knife cutting over the glass. I gave it to me mother.
I would suggest buying a plastic one...it would be the easiest to clean with soap and hot water.

I personally like bamboo and wood boards. I have a wonderful maple block my hubby made me that I would never get rid of. I make sure to clean it immediately after use especially with strong items such as garlic or onion. I have plastic though for cutting raw meats on. I am not fond of them but I can put them in the dishwasher and know they are disinfected. My mother loves her glass board but I do not like them. Things slip too easily off of them.

I have two different types of cutting boards. One is a wood one, and the other is a kind of hard plastic material. Benefits of the hard plastic one is that it hardly makes any noise at all when cutting. Bad news is that if you use it a lot, it does show the cut marks and looks pretty chewed up. The wood one does make a lot of clunking noises...but it still looks nice despite years and years of use.

I can suggest that you must use wood cutting boards because it is kind to knives, and will not dull them quickly. A good maple or beech cutting board is somewhat self-healing, and thus won"t scar as easily as a plastic board. Regularly oil your board with food-grade mineral oil to protect it from staining or warping.

I have a cutting board that I bought it 3 years ago and it says it's has a anti bacteria designed to inhibit bacterial growth. Each side has it's color indicator what side is for meat and what side could be used for cutting veggies.

Just don't get a plastic one. It dulls knives very quickly. Now, granted a plastic one is best for cutting chicken and poultry meats as when you cut on a wood one, any slices in the wood can collect germs from whatever you are cutting and if you don't wash it well.. y ou might have problems. But I have a plastic for cutting chicken only. I have a bamboo wood one for other meats. The bamboo also is a treated wood, don't reemmber what the label said it was treated "with" but it was something to keep the knife from cutting into it and also to help keep knives sharp. Check a place like Bed, Bath and Beyond ... they have lots to choose from. And then... just wash with soap really good after use and dry thoroughly..air dry, not towel dry.
