I started this discussion because I myself don't know anything about the values of being left brain or right brain. I think I read somewhere before which says that being right brain means you're using the more creative part of your brain, so I imagined this can be good. Anyway, did I get a right information in the first place? Don't know! lol. So if anyone has any good ideas of being left brain or right brain, you can share your knowledge here.

As the others have noted...you do need both sides. Some people seem to be more dominated by the left or right hence the the term, "He's a left-brain thinker". You really need a balance there. For the most part, even the most creative people while they seem to utilize their right brain more...they still are logical etc. The term is used loosely and it is rare that you would ever meet someone that is actually one or the other. Back years ago, my dad worked with kids that were genius level students. They all had extremely high IQs. Now they seemed to have a strong imbalance. Couldn't really explain it scientifically to you but socially and emotionally they all had some issues.

Yes...that is pretty much what I was trying to say. Socially & emotionally, they were very awkward. It was a boarding school and all these kids were gifted but socially inept. He taught math there but there was a few who he spent considerable time outside the classroom with...teaching them sports, etc. They had a mule that they had to care for and he brought them home a lot to interact with our family. I was just a kid but I often spent time with him at the school. I don't think it was part of his job description to do all that he did with these kids. They were in that school because they did not fit in with the mainstream public schools. I don't believe that he even knew about left and right brain thinking. I do remember him saying that their problem was that they were so very intelligent that they could not function or fit into a world of ordinary people.

Probably the focus of your point here is the word 'balance'...balance in the use of the left brain and the right brain is most healthy. There is no such thing as using the right brain only 100% to become creative,as one example.
Your story of your father's experience with the genius level students probably tells something about the unhealthy effects of one side of the brain dominating the other side,so there's imbalance...is this assessment correct? So in these students case, I guess what might have happened is that these students have stronger right brains and their left brains are left weak. It then leads to imbalance...and one symptom that came out is that they became emotionally weak. Did I understand it correctly?

I actually think that most people are a little more left or right brained thinkers. You meet someone who is very creative and quite often they will seem "a bit out there"...their thinking extends outside the box so to speak. Likewise, you meet someone that is very intelligent academically and they seem a bit lacking in "street smarts". They still utilize both sides of the brain but one seems to be more dominant.

Like many popular myths, this one is based on fact but has been distorted and exaggerated out of all proportion.
It is based (very loosely) on some work done on epileptic patients by Roger W. Sperry, who was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1981 for his work. He had observed that cutting the communication between the two halves of the brain reduced seizures but that some of his patients experienced side effects which led Sperry to suggest that language was controlled by the left-side of the brain.
According to the left/right-brain dominance theory, the right side of the brain is best at expressive and creative tasks and the left-side of the brain is considered to be adept at tasks that involve logic, language and analytical thinking.
Some of the abilities that are popularly associated with the right side of the brain include: recognizing faces, expressing and reading emotions, music, colour appreciation, recalling and interpreting images, intuition and creativity.
The left brain is thought to be concerned with logical tasks like: language, logic, critical thinking, numbers and reasoning.
Later studies, such as this: http://www.apa.org/news/press/releases/2004/04/interhemispheric.aspx have tended to show that, in fact, both sides of the brain work together in the most apt and gifted people.
When you think about it, this is entirely logical. Someone who is artistically gifted uses both their expressive, intuitive nature and their logical, practical nature in a balanced way. Magnetic resonance studies certainly prove that different parts of the brain are used for different tasks (I have been personally involved as a subject in such studies many times) but, unless all the brain functions are working together in a balanced way, outstanding behaviour is unlikely to result and if one part of the brain is not working effectively, it can actually lead to what are diagnosed as 'disorders'.

These information makes a lot of sense! Now I think we're beginning to solve the mystery behind this left brain right brain thingy. I have a feeling we have another doctor of psychology here. The explanations are very broad, and being a layman I felt the more this is discussed the more confused I got in other parts of this discussion...oh my! lol. I mean this is the only discussion I made that probably has about a 100 or so medical terms. How did I get into this! :D Anyway, thanks a lot doc owlwings, this has been much helpful...sincerely. I wish you good luck to all your future studies. But please count me out as a potential subject of experiment in these matters, okay?

I'm not a doctor or a psychology student but I do read widely and am especially keen on the truth behind hoaxes, scams and myths. I am also a frequent subject for the Medical Research Council and love to be given all sorts of psychological tests (and get quite interested in the reasons for the tests and the testing methods). I suppose that you might say that I'm a keen amateur.
Being a subject for experiments is really quite fun. Some of the tasks are easy and some are a little more difficult, as they have to be to measure anything usefully. The only slightly uncomfortable ones I have had were the ones where I had to do various simple tasks whilst lying absolutely still in the MRI (Magnetic Resonance) scanner. That can be a bit claustrophobic (but I don't mind that) and definitely hard on the back being in the machine for 90 minutes. The good part about being a test subject is that one earns a small honorarium for one's time!
Having been, for much of my life, a computer support person and a software instructor, I know the importance of avoiding technical language where possible, so I always try to give accurate information without using jargon. I am almost certain that some people write technical stuff in a 'technical' way just so that ordinary people will think how clever they must surely be!

I don't see the reason why we should choose which one is better. For sure one would choose the side of brain the he/she has. I wouldn't think that you'd consider your type as the least of the two, right?
If it was me though, I think I would value more the ability of the person to use that particular side of the brain. They say that being right brained is creative while the left one is more of objective. But I don't think that each one of us is solely using the right alone or the left alone. I think it will always be a mix of things.
here are some of the characteristics as found at http://viewzone2.com/bicamx.html

Thanks for these detailed addidtional information laydee. They're a lot of help! So it's becoming clear that both sides of the brain are similar in values but with different functions. So I guess there's no need to develop any side of the brain. Well maybe if you're an artist and you want to be more artistic in your field, you can try the suggestion I suggested above...if there's some truth about it in the first place ( I mean, using your left parts of your body daily to develop the right brain..i.e. brush your teeth with left hand, etc..). I guess this left brain right brain study could well be reserved for doctors and psychologists who may find better use of it than us laymen :)

I think being if you are righting in left hand, you are using right brain and if you are using right hand to write, then you are using left brain more.I am using left brain and left brain deals with logic and identifying pattern.and i think most of the people should use left brain because it helps in the field of science.and if world should develop science should develop and we should more engage in science.Since world will end anyway after billions of years, science should find a way to escape from earth and live in other planets and for doing this we itself need billions of years.so engage in science!!!

I like your point here. So the left brain is the one responsible with logic and things that has something to do with science and it's development. Which leads me to this question that comes to my mind...do you think scientists and those who are highly involved in science use their left brains more? I guess that's the only way they could be genius in the areas of science...by being left brained.

I guess if there are nutritionist experts who tells us what kinds of nutrition would be good for our particular body structure and composition, I think there should also a left-brain right-brain experts who can tell each person which part of the brain they should develop more depending on their particular talents and needs. These experts should also the 'hows' in developing that side of their brain. This idea makes sense, don't you think so?

Scientists need to left brained,But theoretical physicists need both brains. They need creativity which is in right brain. So those who are becomming theoretical physicists should have both brains working.

I didn't know skull bones could make you look more attractive. Maybe this is similar to what they say that people with high cheek bone are usually more attractive than the others. Anyway, thanks for pointing this out.

I would try your suggestion, santana92. But because I'm a Catholic Christian, I would try using the Rosary beads for that matter. I would let you know how it goes.

A person who is "left-brained" is often said to be more logical, analytical and objective, while a person who is "right-brained" is said to be more intuitive, thoughtful and subjective. Many people associate the right brain with creativity and lateral thinking, and there’s certainly something to that. Our left brains create structures that can act as barriers to alternative solutions and perspective.
