Wow so I called OSHA with a question and ended up filing a claim :-/ Did you know if you call about a work place hazard you think exists and find out indeed it is against the rules you must file a claim that moment? I had no idea. After informing me I would be every bit as liable, financially as well as potentially criminally, as my employer if I did not submit a claim that moment they immediately transferred my call to my local district office. I didn't tell them my location! I can't figure out how they knew. I called an 800 number from my cell phone... How could they have known? OSHA is truly a scary organization. Thank god they are for the employees. Also they say you can submit your claim anonymously but with the information that was required of me it would have been pointless to withhold my name as my employer is going to know who it was either way by checking the nightly reports and seeing the leaks in mine. Now it is just a waiting game as I am sure my employer will retaliate as soon as they feel they are no longer being watched. Does anyone know how long OSHA takes to investigate a claim which endangers 20 - 25 lives per pay period in California? Hopefully long enough for me to find a job! These people already wanted to get rid of me, now I may have wiped them out completely as they have very serious infractions that are about to be discovered not including my claim. Based on my claim alone I calculated the fees they will be penalized and it is over $100,000.00 dollars! Employers beware, you really ought to just provide a safe working environment to begin with.

They located you either by the fact that US cell phones have an area code (so at least they could be fairly certain that your were in CA) or more likely in the same way that the police or a rescue agency would locate a call from a cell phone ... by the location of the cell tower which transmitted your call. Whistle-blowers, as a rule, have quite a difficult time remaining anonymous. You should try not to let that worry you, of course, because you have done the right thing. I'm sorry I can't answer the rest of your queries. I am in the UK and haven't any experience of OSHA but perhaps the website: http://www.osha.gov/dcsp/osp/stateprogs/california.html will tell you what their procedures are and how quickly they are likely to deal with claims.
