I have been working as a student part-timer in the most reputed and biggest telecom company in our country. It is the most successful sister concern of Telenor-Norway. The salary I get that many graduate students may dream about, besides I have the security of being hired to the full time position after completing my graduation with all full-time facilities. I also get some extra benefits like sales incentives, preferred shift, exam leaves when needed etc.
There's a very well appreciated culture of awarding the best performer of each month, which is titled as "Best Employee of the Month of XXXXX" which doesn't bother whether you are a part-timer or a full-timer. We both have several KPIs (Key Performance Indicator) to fulfill and the highest KPI gainer is selected as the BEST. The competition is very fair and we can always monitor our performance and competency through various tools which means no biasness. There's another rewarding facility for the BESTs. Every year, the company arrange a talent-hunt show where the best employees do participate in different managerial tasks and assignments. According to their performance they are invited to switch their department or responsibilities when there is a vacancy. So all the best positions are actually filled internally by the BESTs first then the others. Moreover, the person who get the nomination 6 times over 12, a year, he/she is elected as the "Best performer of the Year".
With the help of GOD, though I'm a part-timer, I got the opportunity to earn the "Best" title twice this year so far. As a reward I got a very well decorated certificated, where my name is written in bold letter after the title of "Best Employee of the Month". I also got an appreciation letter, which was handed by the Head of my department himself to me. It was written that, "my dedication inspired them a lot". That was a great great achievement for me though it didn't give me any monetary value but a satisfaction that I'm the Best among 1500 other employees of my department.
To some of my colleagues, it doesn't mean anything. They think that, if you work hard for your company than your company must reward you that will have a monetary value. But to me, the personal satisfaction and social acceptance that I got from working in this company, and the recognition that I achieved is far more important than the raise in balance of my bank account. I do prefer recognition over money as when I see the glow in my fellows eyes when they look at me is more than anything to me.
What do think friends? am I right? or some of my colleagues are right?

ha ha....good judgement. i'm actually confused what's actually clever to think about. I'm about to enter into a corporate world where a sharp brain which can shape and reshape so many strategies can always survive...
I need a good reputation and a stable platform, after achieving that I'll run for money... after all money does matter...

I think that it is cheap of a company to have intense KPI's yet only reward individuals with a pat on the back. After all you are doing more for them than just saying 'my employer is great'. But outside the cooperate world, I know that as a molecular-bio/pre-med student I care nothing about income above the necessities of whats required to make my future family happy. And if and when I make a discovery or breakthrough, it wont be because I'm looking for a check to sign. Putting it all together I guess the satisfaction or validity depends on how passionate you are about what you are doing. Your collegues may not care about the company the same way you do, or see the big picture in advancement. therefore, they are only satisfied with money.

yeah........you are right too. actually we have some customer service part where we need KPIs. that's really boring when it becomes tough to achieve. May be I'm still a student, getting enough to lead my life after paying tuition fees and house rent, that's why i'm still satisfied with recognition. umm....I'm a HR major and doing marking as well so i'm getting lot to learn practically and also getting experiences. Those are important for me at this stage than money...Yes it varies completely on the situation we are in....
thank you for your response...keep mylotting..:)

I am afraid I agree with your friends that the company should reward you with money. Money itself is a form of recognition. I also agree that it is not always possible for businesses to reward their employees financially, especially when the going is tough. However, if the business is earning profits then rewarding employees is reasonable expectation. Your recognition is within the company. Money is a recognition within the company as well as outside. I would choose the later.

Ideally, you should be right. Every company should extend all efforts to reward their employees. Even if it isn't monetary, but the recognition of their efforts, and maybe respect of their colleagues.
But at the end of the day, a job is still a job. And with age comes responsibilities. Specially if one has a family. And the only thing that weighs heavily on family and responsibilities are monetary rewards.
I do appreciate recognition from my peers, but I'd rather have the monetary reward for the appreciation of my family.

It depends money is good but recognition is important for moral. After acknowledgement comes many more opportunities you never know maybe later something will open up that is a better position and even come with more money as well. Its important to have both but what matters is what you think about it.
