The press or newspaper is a public forum. It plays an important role in a democracy. It express public opinion and encourages fearless criticism. We can know what is happening in the country through the newspaper.
The newspapers enjoy freedom in our country. This is good. Opinions will differ and there will be controversy. But that is good for a healthy society. Where everybody can criticise and be criticised, there cannot be misure of power or public trust. Monopoly of the press is also bad. When there are different newspapers, they complete with one another. This healthy rivalry is good for a democracy. If one newspaper suppresses some news, another newspaper will publish it.
It is true that freedom of the press should not mean licence or irresponsibility. Sensational news often spreads panic or fear. Distorted reportage does great harm. Often people are excited over an insignificant happening. Newspapers should see that the presentation of facts may not spread hatred or distrust. Nothing silly should be published against any religion, language or culture. The press should be unbiased and present facts as they are. The Government should not impose censorship or curb the freedom of the press. The press is the sentinel of a democratic society. Its freedom guarantees the freedom of the people.

Freedom of speech is indeed, one of the marks of democracy. However, it should be practiced wisely and used for the general public"s best interest. The problem with self-expression is it can be perceived in so many ways depending on how it is presented. With social media continuously rising in this age of technology, news is spread faster and wider. And so, freedom of speech should be encouraged but the true shall always ensue.
