How to earn money through youtube?

I am just curious if someone could earn bucks buy just sharing or uploading videos in youtube? Does youtube pay you if a certain video you uploaded attracts a lot of viewers? I am interested in making some fortune online and I think youtube, being a tremendously popular site, could really help me with that. What do you think? Thanks for your ideas folks!
