Hi Everyone,
Is it just me or has elementary school homework gotten really difficult? My daughter brings home math homework and I have to use the internet to figure it out. I have been in the accounting field for most of my life, and I have to use the internet to help my daughter with her homework. She is in 3rd grade and working on fractions, and if she doesn't complete the problems using "their" method, then she doesn't get credit for it. What difference does it make what method she uses as long as she gets the correct answer? Everyday she comes home with a different method to answer the same problems. I asked her teacher about this and she said that the new system is to give the children different options and then in the end they can pick which one works best for them. All this does is confuse my daughter. I have spoke to other parents who have the same problem. One parent told me she made a copy of her 2nd graders homework and handed it out to accounting department at work. She said that none of them could answer all ten of the "2nd grade" questions.
Also, this whole FCAT testing thing is out of control. This was my daughters first year for FCAT testing, and they had her so stressed out she ended up getting sick. She hasn't missed a sick day in two years, but ended up out sick for two days over this testing. School is for learning, but I think the stress and pressure they are putting on young children is ridiculous!
On a positive note, all of our children should grow up to be geniuses.

That is crazy that accountants have trouble with childrens homework, that tells me it is WAY too difficult. Are they trying to give the kid heart attacks or panic attacks?
It worries me a lot because this year my daughter will be starting school. Shes very smart but if her work is that hard she might not have a chance!
Hopefully here the work will be less challenging. To me school is difficult enough. They dont need to put more pressure on our kids...

Actually Loving, if her daughter is doing algebra, that is different than math for accounting.

Try this one out. My son was in third grade last year when I was taking elementary algebra in college and he was doing the same work I was doing. Then by this fall, when I took a "break" from math classes, he brought home math homework that I already did, (and forgot how to do which is why it is useless to make me take math for my degree) and I also had to look it up online to remind myself how to do it. So it isn't you, it is hard and as parents, I guess we need to keep up and possibly keep contact with our children's teachers so we can be informed on what they are doing.
