Hula Hoop a good Aerobic Exercise!

I was reading Consumer Reports on Health and came across a tip that spinning a hula hoop is actually a really good aerobic exercise. I thought to myself, "That sounds like fun! I used to love my hula hoop." So I checked in the garage and my old pink hula hoop was still there. I took it inside, dusted it off (and it was really grimy!), and started spinning it. Since then I've spun it almost every day for as long as possible. My current record is 32 minutes. It's not something that I would have normally thought of as a good exercise, and when I'm spinning my hoop for the first few minutes it doesn't really even feel like exercise. But after ten minutes I start to break a sweat and my sides get that 'I'm working out' burn. Anyone else spin a hula hoop? What's your record? Any other fun aerobic exercises you've tried?

Interesting that you should bring this up! I saw hula hoops in the Big Lots store here and thought about getting one, but felt foolish. Now I wish I had and it's been on my mind. Of course, they're all sold out, but I think I'll go find one.

Yeah, I read later how to size one for an adult. Of course, I've forgotten the formula, but I know I need a bigger one than what I was looking at. I don't know where to go to find one here, though.

I had one child's toy hula hoop that even as a kid I could never manage to spin well. I got a bigger one later which is technically still a child's toy, but it's a great hoop that spins really well. I'd really encourage you to get one, there's nothing foolish about wanting to spin a hula hoop! It really is great exercise. But I'd advise you get a bigger adult-sized hoop if you do get one, and don't be afraid to ask to try it out too! lol

It depends on if they are the hula hoops that are a child's toy or the fitness hula hoops. I got one from Wal-mart that was a child's toy and couldn't even begin to do it. When I went to my gym though and saw the ones that they have there I got one and it is sooo much easier to keep up.

That's one of the fun stuff I never get to learn and enjoy when I was a kid. I think I had a very lousy childhood.. Would it be easy to learn hula hoop even if Im already at my late 20's?

I don't know about easy, but I bet you could. I eventually got the hang of hula hooping as a kid and it wasn't that hard to pick back up again for me, but everyone's different. I tried to get my sister into hula hooping, and she spent ten minutes spinning it once and picking it up off the floor before she called it quits. I think it just takes perseverance. There's no harm in trying!

I think you could learn to use the hoola hoop. It's not that hard, just takes a little bit of determination. The kind of hoop you use also makes a difference. Make sure you get one large enough for you.

There is an excerise on the wiifit plus called hula hoop, you are right it is fun and good for the old hips. On the wiifit plus you don't need a hoop as the wii person has the hoop and you just move your hips around and the wii picks up the movement from the wii board and if you don't do it right the wii person drops the hoop. I do find myself doing the movements around the house when I'm standing still etc. Hubby did give me a strange look the other day as I was hula hooping while washing the dishes!!!!

You are right you don't need a wii to hula hoop, or a hoop as you just need to swing those hips around. Bonus of using a hoop is that when you drop it you have ot reach down to pick it up, another form of excerise you can't get with the wii. We are always moving about as well, we like ot keep on the move

The hoop also keeps me moving so I can't forget I'm supposed to be exercising and quit when I get distracted. If I hesitate and forget then the hoop will start to fall and I'll be reminded! Also, I look less silly swiveling my hips around when there's a hoop around them.

Well I don't have a wii, and I'm not going to drop the cash for it when I have a perfectly good hoop already at home. lol I bet it is funny to watch when you're not doing the hula hoop. I do that too, move my hips when I haven't even got the hoop. Nobody at home looks at me weird though. We're a fidgety family, everybody seems to dance in place.

This is funny. Because I recently started doing the Wii Fit on Wii and one of the areobic exercises that you do is a hula hoop test. You sway your hips as you would on a hula hoop and watch the tv and as you do it counts your hip sways, and also there are to MII's that toss more hula hoops at you and you try to catch and you get more points. It's super awesome and alot of fun. My husband and I enjoy trying to out do it eachother.

So I've heard! Well, I've heard that the Wii-Fit has a hula hoop exercise on it. I don't have a Wii and I'm likely to never get one because I'm not a gamer, so the analogue hoop is more than good enough for me! But it does sound like it might be fun.

Wow, I was just thinking last night that I should start a discussion on this same topic! I LOVE hula hooping! I started using it a few months. I must admit that when I first started most of my exercise entailed bending down to pick it up off the floor! I used to hula hoop when I was a kid so I was determined to master it. I went out and got myself an actual fitness hoop. I love it because it is weighted (you can get them different weights) and it comes apart so that you can take it anywhere. What got me started on it was that I was at my gym and saw that they had hula hoops there, so I asked the girl working there is they really worked or not. She said absolutely! They're great for exercising your core muscles. So now, after I do the circuit at my gym I hoop for 10-15 minutes as an extra. I also have my hoop at home for days that I don't make it to the gym.

Great minds think alike! (So sorry for stealing your discussion idea!) For the first part of my childhood most of my experience with the hula hoop also involved bending down to pick it up. I thought I just didn't have the hang of it or something, but then I tried out a friend's hula hoop and found that I could spin it for more than two rotations! In that case I realized it was actually MY hula hoop that was the problem, it was too small and it wasn't weighted well. I got a bigger one (which is the pink one I still have) and I could spin it so much longer! Sometime before high school that poor hoop wound up in the garage where it sat for years. When I picked it back up again, I didn't have any problems getting back into the groove. I tried to get my sister to try it out, but she just dropped it a lot and then gave up. She wasn't really into it when she was younger, and I can't seem to get her into it now. It's still good exercise, even if you're bending down to pick it up all the time. I've seen the hula hoops that you can take apart and put back together again! I've thought about getting one or another fitness-type hula hoop. I love my old pink one of course, but it's technically a pre-teen toy and I wonder if I would get a better workout out of a fitness hoop.

Well, the fitness ones that come apart are not cheap. Mine was $45 CDN but I think it was well worth the price. They are great exercise and help to whittle inches off your waist and abdomen, which is what I need to work on. I like that it comes apart as well as I've been thinking about taking it when I go on vacation and doing it on the beach or something. That way I can still get my exercise in while vacationing. As for stealing my idea, no worries! You didn't actually steal it, lol. I'm just glad that I see someone else interested in hooping!

Ooh! Hula hooping on the beach sounds like so much fun! I actually hadn't looked at prices yet, just the hoops themselves but when I hear the price I'm not entirely certain I still want one! lol For now my pink one is just fine, but I think the portability of a hoop that you can take apart would be great if I wanted to take my hula hoop somewhere. So until I'm ready to do some vacation-spending or my pink one snaps or something, I think I'll save my cash for now.

I agree with you hula hoop is a good Aerobic Exercise.I love hula hoop too, but I am not good at it. My recorder is about ten minutes. It's hard for me to keep it spinning not to let it fall to my feet. I like to jog. I jog every morning before breakfast. I think it is more suitable for me.

Well everyone finds an exercise they enjoy more than others, and I think that's a good thing. We can all find our own special favorite exercise and no one has to do the exact same thing as everyone else.
