Which type of music genre makes brains stimulated for studying?

Well, I have read an article last year in a magazine that songs from rock genre can stimulate the brains (at a proper volume) which adjusts it in an alert mood for studying. I discussed it with my uncle and rejected the idea and claims that classical music is more effective as it soothes the mind at the proper brain wave level for studying. I really don't have an idea about this and I'm not sure if my source article is credible; But base on my experience, I study better while listening to lively music. Although part of me agree that maybe classical music is better for relaxing the mind. Anyone who has studied about the relation of music to the brains that also want to answer? I'll be grateful to hear from you ^.^

For me, it depends on my mood. When I'm in the mood to study but I don't want to hear outside distractions, I listen to rock and lively music, but if I am not so much in the mood but I need to study the melow ones are suitable for me. :) I dont know about scientific explanations of it but it worked for me. :)

So maybe that's why I prefer loud and lively music, to repel outside noises (I guess ^^) I'll try studying in mellow tunes and see if its effective. But when study is a must (like exam is just a day away) I think I'll still stick to rock, to be sure xP..

I think I read somewhere that if you want to study (or do any other thinking actvity) in the most efficient way, you should refrain from listening to music. Your brain could get distracted. The whole music help study is most likely a placebo effect.

Hi, I commented again here to thank you for your concern & advice. I was able to pass the board from a good concentrated study without music :)

Some new research suggests that a chemical in your brain helps choose which musical genre you best respond to. As for me , it really does not matter what kind of music I listen to as long as it puts my mind in study mode. Besides, some source indicates that there are many types of music that have been shown to put your mind in study mode. Here are a few of the most mentioned. - For a mind-boosting effects try Baroque classical music. - Others say that music at 60 beats-per-minute is required to put the brain in a bright and breezy frame of mind. In this state your thinking and creativity are said to be easier. Concertos for Recorder – Telemann & Vivaldi is recommended. - If classical music is not your thing, there are other types of music that have been shown to increase your concentration levels. Ambient music or sound is designed to keep your brain engaged at a lower, subconscious level. Waterfalls, rain, seashore, whatever your taste. - More modern electronic Chill out music genres such as Trip-hop, Nu jazz, Ambient House, Ambient Trance, New Age and other sub-genres of Down tempo are said to be designed to relax the mind and allow it to roam. However, I am not really a fan of these kind of music genres. - Finally, Eno’s 'Music for Airports' has been said to be noted as being useful for serious studying and deep concentration. This music is said to be designed to relax stressed out travelers at the airport and put them at ease. Very strange, huh?

Wow that's cool :D That means you're really good at concentrating to be able to focus whatever the genre would be. ^-^ I didn't know that there are tons of musical genre that helps the brain relaxed. Even New Age and Nu Jazz ('o') Nor did I know that those music at airports are made to relax travelers and that they're useful for studying. That's really unusual. Thank you for listing a few of them, I'll check some out at youtube later.

When I am studying, I have to listen to some kind of music because I know that I cannot stay concentrated if I am in silence as I don't like it. However, the music that I listen to cannot have lyrics because I will then start singing along and it means that it would be the words of the song that I think about rather than the material that I am trying to learn whilst studying. I find that classical string music is the best as it means that I am relaxed, but not in silence, so really it is the best of both worlds and creates the perfect environment for studying.

That was like me when I was in high school & college. But now studying in silence has been really helpful. Of course I still study with music around... Oh, try studying (learning from the start) with music. Then when you need to review what you've studied with music, try it without music or any noise. I think it helps that you have grasped the learning materials beforehand when you study in silence. Since you already know what you're reading, I think the silence will not distract you. I hope this works for you.

dear, I always study with classical and some of my teachers in the past years have played classical music while we work I never listen to rock music when I'm studying because I can't work with it on.Classical music soothes the mind making it easier to study with. However Maybe a mix of the 2 genres would be best like jazz music or something because it soothes the mind while keeping you awake.I have not tried jazz music while I study but it may be best.Try to find the right music for you because there are so many genres and it doesnt hurt to try a few.

I tried classical, blues and country... I find them nice but I get distracted by some accents because I keep remembering old funny musical movies that I used to sing along with .

My mother told me rock makes you be fast awaken. It has a lot of drum and bass rythm in it.There are too many records nowadays . You can choose from a huge range.many people think it's very healthy to listen to rock.It helps your ears to get accustomed to traffic jams in the streets.

That's peculiar, I didn't notice that the reason traffic jam noises don't bother me during heavy traffic to the distant review center I went to was because I listen to rock music a lot. You sure it's 'get accustomed' or because now my hearing is faint. Jk ^_^ thanks for sharing this btw

Studies have suggested that certain musical artists, Mozart being the most prominent, can positively affect certain parts of our brains, particularly spacial awareness and alertness, and can temporarily raise those parts of IQ scores by up to 5 points. I've never heard of any rock artists being listed amongst those that inspire these results. However these benefits are temporary and only last for up to 10 minutes after the music is turned off. Having the music on whilst studying can be distracting and can actually hinder studying as your mind attempts to focus on too many things. Furthermore, the benefits only apply to certain parts of the intellect, primarily spacial awareness (on IQ tests this is tested by mentally rotating shapes and images for example) but has no affect on maths scores, so it largely depends on what exactly you are studying. I think its individual. I used to study while listening to oldies. But to tell the truth when I needed to study real hard and focus real well I would turn everything off, grab the book and study hard. That had the best results by far!

During my last week cram for the board exam, even though I prefer having music while I study, I completely shut off all devices I got addicted to (like laptop & cellphone)... And for some reason, even without the loud & upbeat music I got used to when I study, I had complete focus on my studies & the only distraction that troubled me was hunger. Months before I had music but I was so pressured to study that when just an hour past, I want to distract myself by going outside, the kitchen, the c.r. And I just feel like I'm in no mood for studying. I felt like I want to collapse and just let go of taking the board. It was a surprise how I got back to my game when I shut myself off from electronics & internet. I happily passed ^__^ So I guess you're right that no sounds really gave me the best result.

I personally believe there isn't one genre of music that helps the brain more than another genre. I believe it's based on the person's taste. The brain is too personal with music to say that one genre will have the same effect on everyone. Or at least a better effect. I mainly say this because I know that when people listen to a song or a certain genre they really enjoy, the brain then produces dopamine. One of the reasons why listening to music when you're upset helps you out.

Nice Discussion Friend. Listening to music stimulate the brain to study. I think it can be somewhat correct. By Listening to music our brain relax and have a better mood for studding or anything else. I think classical music is such type of example for you. Listen it and have a great study.

Thanks Burhan for your concern advice ^_^ I've read articles that different music affects the brain. It's pretty useful to have music around with a variety of choices. Although studying in a quiet area is also suited for particular kinds of studies. It's great that there are helpful researches that are focused on how our minds work. These research help improve several students in efficiency & effectiveness. I'm glad I'm born in this time & age since several studies from articles I've read in different media have really helped me a lot.
