Advice on creating a track car.....

my puma - 1997 1.7i ford puma in red
April 27, 2012 12:58pm CST
My Brother and myself have decided to try turning my 1997 1.7i Ford Puma into a track car. We have VERY limited knowledge of engines but are very good at stripping stuff out. We have a guy who will weld us in a roll cage. Any advice on what else we should add / remove would be very helpful. Our plan of action is.... 1) strip out anything thats not involved in moving car forward. 2) install roll cage. Thats it, we are blogging it all if anyone is interested: racingpumaproject.blogspot.co.uk/ again any help / advice most welcome Thank you Lee

I did some hotrod racing long, long ago! You need to follow the rules of the appropriate racing body. What is in the car AND what is on you (a licensed race driver) is always set out in clear black and white! The car has to be suitable for racing (many makes aren't strong enough!), have an engine capacity according to its class, and all safety requirements must be fitted and operable. You will find that more stuff goes into the car after stripping it. Safety first! You, or whoever drives it, needs a race license and insurance (public liability insurance and probably other kinds too). Racing is a serious business. If you think it is just fun, then stop now!

Thank you, We have looked into the racing licence and we are both going to apply next year (We are in the uk). We have also looked into entering a rallycross cup. We think that we can get the car upto scratch. A friend has offered to install a FIA rollcage for us. The only thing we are a little nervous about is that our puma is a 1.7ltr engine and the class we would be entering will be 2ltr so we may be under powered. We are going to do things by the book and hopefully have some fun along the way (probably some tears also). We plan to spend the next year getting it ready and testing on our local tracks open days. Thanks for your help. have you got any pics of your cars? would love to see them.
