Have you NEVER flown by plane? If so, how come?

I was always the odd one out at school - because I had never been on a plane. I'm nearing my mid-twenties and I've still never been on a plane! Flying by plane is cheaper than ever nowadays, but I really find the idea uncomfortable. Why? Whilst all the countries of this world are still squabbling about curbing climate change emissions, I don't want to add to them. I know I'm entitled to fly, but I just don't see how I can justify it. I do want to go to far away places in my life times, like Australia, but not whilst things are as they are. Some argue that my emissions will hardly make a difference but that isn't true at all.
Are you a plane-virgin too?? How come??

If environmentalism is the reason for you to not take a plane, I feel it is a bit too extreme. You don't take a plane ride everyday. You need to take a plane if you want to travel to Australia unless you are willing to spend maybe 10-20 days on the sea inside a vessel.
What I don't think you could justify your stand is that maybe you are doing things EVERYDAY that is hurting the earth but you still are doing: Ride on a vehicle or any engined transports. Use a refrigerator or air conditioner... If you are someone who really does his best to not use anything at all that could hurt the environment, then you have a point but it is very difficult to do if you are living in city. It is not easy to not use plastic bag for example. We can just try to recycle the used ones and cut down the usage.
So traveling in a plane is not that serious as you need it to get to where you want to go in reasonable time. And you only travel once in a blue moon.

I admire what you do for the environment. I am not questioning that. The point I am making is that there are times we just can not avoid using those "not-so-green' technologies if we want to achieve something. For example, if you want to travel to Australia, do you think you can choose not to take the plane? It is different story if you choose not to go. And what about the computer you use? Any parts inside that was made using rare earth? But still we need that machine because we don't have a better alternative yet.

When you think that many people in the UK go on a foreign holiday at least once a year, and sometimes more often, the emissions rack up. What I have a problem with is the amount of emissions that are chucked out for one short journey. You may feel that it's extreme, but I just see it as a lifestyle choice. I live in a capital city and I have a lot of attractions on my doorstep that are completely free to do, so this encourages me further. Aviation is one of the major sticking points for environmental regulation - emissions go uncapped or permits are created/traded in the EU I don't want to fly. I live in a city but I don't see how it's difficult to live a green lifestyle? I don't drive, I walk 3 miles to work and back, and work right next to the biggest shopping centre in Europe. I buy local produce and grow my own when possible, I use fabric bags and not plastic ones, and the only real gadget I have is my computer. Everyone pollutes, I can;t say that I don't because I do, but I do make a conscious effort to try and do the best I can to contribute.

You're so right about it being expensive. I looked for a flight to Las Vegas and it was nearly £1000!

my age is twice as much as yours but like you 'm also a "plane-virgin"! i have never been outside the Philippines yet though i have family members to visit abroad in the US, in Australia, in Hong Kong but 'm still not interested to fly. but my reason is not the same as yours. i guess 'm enjoying myself too much here in my own country ... i don't need to go abroad to see beautiful and scenic views.

You're so lucky to live in such a beautiful country. I'm not surprised you don't feel the need to go abroad!

Nope never been in a plane, being in a plane is safer then driving in a car statisticly speaking. I just never have he the opportunity to fly, nor the need I didn't really travel much when I was a child and if we did we drove, I like to ride in a car and enjoy the scenery. Plus I'm pretty closterphobic, and don't like people or crowds so a plane really isn't the ideal place for me.

I have no problem with going far by airplane. I like to go travel then i really like to go by airplane, it takes a short time, for sure, shorter than going by bus or train.
I used to love aboard, traveling abroad then if i refuse to go by airplane, then how could i go?

I flew the first time when I was forty two. I accompanied young people from church to an activity across the country, the church paid for it because I was willing to go. I do not choose to fly because of all the security that has been added. When I first married this husband we flew a few times, but with our distance from a major airport by the time we fly to a major hub and arrive two hours early we could have driven half way to most of our destinations. I would love to try some train travel at least once, though.
