It is a star rating system. You must have a minumum of 100 posts to get the ratings, and they go up depending on your posts and when people mark them as the best response to their discussion. 10 is the highest, one is the lowest. You will start off low, and hopefully grow with the more responses you do that are relevant to the posts.

Receiving a best response affects nothing at all.
It does NOT create earnings and it does NOT affect your star.
When a user reaches 100 their star could be any colour at all depending entirely upon how others have rated their activity. It could then rise or fall for the same reason. The star has nothing to do with our activity but everything to do with how others rate.

It is your reputation, it can increase or decrease depending on your posts. If it violates the guidelines then most likely it will decrease and if all your posts are not deleted, the it will increase. As your reputation increases or decreases, your earnings also will be affected.
