What has happened to Wigan ?

April 29, 2012 8:02am CST
Wigan are currently playing some of the best football in the premiership and have won 5 out of their last 7 games beating Liverpool, Manchester United and Newcastle in that run and unfortunately losing to Chelsea. What has happened to them ? Going from a team almost certain to get relegated to one that is nearly safe. It is strange and makes me think that if they had been this well throughout the season then they would certainly be in the top half of the table and pushing for European football.

The credit should go to Roberto Martinez, the Wigan manager. Wigan is expected to fight relegation battles every season until they drop. It is not surprising. They are just a small team with a limited budget. It is an interesting fact that rugby is more popular than football in Wigan. Roberto Martinez's football is elegant. He likes to play a passing game. To do that when you are facing a top team who is supposedly more skilled and experienced, it is a risk. But his team has done well. With the kind of depth they have got on their bench, they would not be able to sustain their play consistently. But I am sure Wigan will not drop this season. They have done just enough. But we will see them again next year on the same battle ground. Their better players will be bought by other teams. Even Mr Martinez may join a bigger team next season. I think the post at Aston Villa will be good for him but he has declined that before.

It is not much as we are think, sometimes it will happen that really we not unexpected happen. It is like Chelsea beat up the Barcelona which made a record for 2 and 3 years. It is all confidence that have to play and show an excellent performance. It is a part of coach too.

If I am not wrong, they beat Arsenal as well. They have shown top relegation fighting form since the turn of last month and have been fighting really hard for survival. I think the form of Moses up front has also helped as he seems to be pumping goals for fun. I think they have done enough to survive the drop this season. Cheers! Ram

beating a good team does not mean that wigan is good. They are not consistent enough to win the match. I think that is why wigan is at the 16 place....

It is never a good time to face a team that is fighting for their survival. Wigan has proved this point by beating the likes of Man Utd, Arsenal and Newcastle. If they have this fight in them all season, one wonders where will they be.
