In our issue with China about this who really owns hat piece of island/seas? China is a really big country, I don't really think we stand any chance against them alone- they even showed us some military stuff they cna do. I do hope the US helps us with this..since it shows in some old documents that we really own the shoals..

Why wouldn't America help? America helps everyone as long as you aren't American and the best part is...you can hate us and they'll still help.

hello there! The issue about China and Philippines regarding the scarborough shoal is becoming a serious problem. But to think that US may help us is ridiculous. In times we do not need the help of uncle sam, we tend to stage demonstrations in front of the US embassy and let them go away. We say the most nasty things we can utter. But when the country is in trouble, we plead for uncle Sam to intervene I hope people will realize this. Just a thought!

Very good observation. I tihnk our special relationship with the US depends on whose talking. If it's the government, of course, it's good and we maintain a 'special relationship'. But if it's the militants, I think you already know where that will end. Personally, I don;t think that the US will help us - I think they have enough problems of their own (still fighting Iran and Syria) and I don;t think they will waste efforts on us. And of course, it does not want to alienate China because it is a good economic partner. I think it's high time that we stand on our own. I just don't know how we are going to do it and how to make everybody do it.

Bulls eye there jeanneyvonne! I agree with you in saying US will not help us. For one ground, their military base is already out of the country so they do not have any reason to lift a finger. I think I do not agree with you in saying we can do it on our own in this particular matter. First, the country is not in any way prepared with any form of physical engagement in case shooting happens.China is always prepared. second, China cannot be taken with diplomatic method of settling dispute. Their personality alone tells it. Besides China considers the Philippines as too small and powerless to be an opponent. With this, their is a need of a more powerful country or united nations to intervene in the settlement.

I would hope so too.. but there are forces in the U.S. who are working to make us closer to third world, and then of course will not be able to assist anyone anywhere..

Defense minister and president recently just declared their country- Phillippine doesn't need any outsider intervention into its domestic affair over a disputed remote island sovereignty, especially USA. They believe Filipino military are well trained and well equiped to take on any challenges pose by China, and as a matter of fact, any foreign troop in South China Sea. They claimed the dispute is just some friendly disagreement between neighbor, it is not necessary to seek help from any outside foreign power, i am doubtful US will want to force itself into this childish display of hostility between Phillippine and China, it has much urgent issue to take care instead of tuck its nose into both nations barbaric behavior over the severeignty of a group of remote islands that had never being care for by either nation in the past except after the discovery of large deposit of crude oil and natural gas. The dispute can always forward to UN international tribunal for a solution, after all, those remote islands that are outside 12 miles territorial water of Phillippine and China main coastline are actually belong to no nation rather than China or Phillippine, both need to grow up and stop acting like bunch of spoiled kids hungry for war.

We have a mutual defense treaty with the U.S. and article 5 states " ARTICLE V. For purposes of ARTICLE IV, an armed attack on either of the Parties is deemed to include an armed attack on the metropolitan territory of either of the Parties, or on the island territories under its jurisdiction in the Pacific Ocean, its armed forces, public vessels or aircraft in the Pacific." but any party can always call it quits ARTICLE VIII. "This Treaty shall remain in force indefinitely. Either Party may terminate it one year after notice has been given to the other party.". For the full treaty read http://www.chanrobles.com/mutualdefensetreaty.htm I'm afraid our ally has many problems of her own to deal with right now, but I hope they would see that this is of Global interest and to her own interest as well. I hope everybody would find a peaceful solution and China would realize that it has more to lose than gain if it makes the first move. Let's just pray and at the same time strengthen ourselves and be more self reliant.

I think that the treaty was created to protect American interest here and in our neighboring countries. We have always been a non-NATO ally and we endured a 'special' relationship. I also agree that US is very busy right now, especially they are gearing up with the presidential elections. Of course, i tihnk the situation in our vicint5y is reported on their numerous reports but there is still otehr concerns like Syria or Vietnam. Guess we have to wait in queue.

I think there is more than a show of force in this issue, it will also be a battle of politics and diplomacy. Surely, nobody wants a actual battle or war waged on Asia just because of territorial rights ( this is the modem age, but I am presuming this idea). There will a lot of debates, negotiations and possibly, under the table transactions. Just hope that we will have our rights respected, not with China but also with other nations.

Yes, for the mean time I think the best thing to do is to make ourselves strong, remember we are not escalating because we are purchasing more arms, we are simply restoring what we were and upgrading, we use to have the most modern and powerful military in Southeast Asia but ended during Marcos era due to corruption. Philippine military is not that weak either as we believe, we are 31st strongest in the world, small but experienced from years or decades of anti-insurgency and contrary to what they say that our defense budget is peanuts, we spend I think almost the same as Syria and look how strong the Syrian army is now while ours is either misappropriated or corrupted, and this has been going on for years When those ships and squadron of F-16 arrives ( 138 more defense contracts are pending or being reviewed then we will be in a good position again to defend our sovereignty, we don't plan to go to war with anybody, only to defend what is ours from poachers and other illegal activities I think interests is again shifting from the middle east to Asia, and where there are interests there might be trouble so better be ready while always remaining a peaceful and God fearing nation. "God bless our country"

Those insane Filipinos does want any help from America, those Filipinos who wants America leave the Philippines. However, those who don't want a war, a help from America is a very big solution to this big problem. But, I think, if the problem goes to worst, America will help us still but not instantly, by just a couple of seconds, no! It takes days before they can decide what to do. What will be a nice solution to this problem. At this point, Philippines must still fight for its rights. Even though they say tha we, Filipinos are underdog of United States and even other countries, and even in our own country, we still have the right to fight. And we still have the final decision to make.

Yeah, the government says that they want to be diplomatic and such- since we can't really go offensive on them. I hope this issue gets resolved soon- it's become scarier... I can't believe how people fight over territory, it's just lie the time before- wars and monarchies and stuff.

With the way some of our politicians keep telling everyone to get the help of the US I can't help but feel ashamed. We only look pitiful and it shows how incapable this country is of defending itself when faced with a super power like China. Thanks a lot to the crocodiles in the armed forces. It looks to me that our country is like a kid going to his big brother crying for help over some petty quarrel by some bully. But will America help us? I think they would as far as moral support is concerned . I'm saying this because with their war expenses with iraq and afghanistan, I don't think America is in pretty shape at the moment to face another war, specially if it's with China. That's why they only promised to upgrade our military. Let's not forget that military upgrades are not free but rather comes with a hefty price tag.

Its impossible U.S will not help us. They can only give us a moral support. Because U.S only choose success country. Mrs. Hilary clinton said that U.S is neutral between china and philippines. china, russia, and U.S they are both allies since World war 2.
