Is it OK to force workers to do overtime?

Right now, the world is suffering an economic slump, and many companies are struggling to keep their heads high. To do this, many of those companies are forcing workers to do overtime. I don't think it's a good idea, seeing that workers wear out overtime because they are not born to work too hard and get karoshi. My idea is that companies should not FORCE their workers to do overtime, but instead ALLOW overtime. What do you think?

No way it is OK. I guess it wasn't in the contract, they hired the person under certain circumstances. It's just not ethic to do that. They could allow it with some form of compensation, because otherwise it would be sqeezing all out of the employees and not taking their rights into consideration.
